American Sign Language?

No, seriously, you probably already have what it takes. A mic in your end, a mic pre and some way of changing the volume. Mix to taste into the headphone output.

It might help us giving suggestions if you tell what equipment you have.

Don't laugh, I found out about this box at Radio Shack from someone on the "Acoustic Recording" forum (Joe H?). I don't have the skew#, but RS has a "paging microhone" that has a switchable chime and a line level output. Push the button, it sends out the chime and then you can talk via any powered speaker. I got one and plug it into a pair of these little Yamaha powered speakers. Heck, you can run it into ANYTHING, even a geetar amp! I know it didn't cost me even $50.00 and it works like a champ! Check out the Radio Shack website for "paging microphone".
