there is no windows equv.

there is no comparison to garage band because of its extremely simple instrument setup (MIDI and real line-in-puts)

i very much suggest getting a mac if your heavy into MIDI/techno/etc

if not get the trial to Audition...[http://www.adobe.com and see how that suits you]

garageband sucks monkey balls! i rather use ableton or something. im 16 and im a pro in audio stuff. im the best out of all. im too good in this audio world. too much for my egoes.

Not "equivalent", but I've always imagined Tracktion being a good 'step up' for Garageband users.

It adds more power, but doesn't add more clutter or esotericity. (if that wasn't a word before, it is now!) Cross-platform, and license includes installation on 2 computers, so you can put it on your desktop and your laptop, or your PC and your Mac.

T2 comes bundled with a bunch of stuff including an Amp sim (Amplitube LE) and all-purpose instrument ROM (Sampletank2 SE), a very capable drum machine (Linplug's RMIV), and a whole bunch of other goodies.

BUT, I don't even use the retail box version (ie. I don't have all those plugs) and I'm well-chuffed and quite satisfied as a T2 user.

i tried out the traction demo, and while i liked the interface, it had some problems when it came to midi, (sync, mmc etc.)
a little more complex but a really functional software is cubase se,
great bang for the buck...

Yes GarageBand is amazing . . . Never seen anything like it. Nice.
