I've never used the lca-2b, but the scuttle-butt seems to be that it doesn't rate very high and is not one of the better Tube-Tech products. I'm sure it has it's uses though. The best way to use it is to use it and tweak it until it sounds right to you. Use it on every source you have available and you will soon learn what it is good at and what it is not good at. No shortcuts. This is how you learn what your gear is capable of. In the process hopefuly you gain skill and experience that will help in the future.

Here is a tip I've used and still use for any new processing gear that I want to quickly master the operation of. Feed the processor using various solo intruments playing loops from a sampler and/or drum machine and start tweaking it. Feed it some music from the radio or a CD player. Feed a signal from your TV via the output or DVD/VCR output and tweak it as you surf through different channels. These sources work well for learning about effects like delay/reverb/chorus/flange or filters and eq's.

Don't be lazy and spend as much time as it takes for you to master the operation of every piece of gear you own so that you can instantly manipulate it to your needs as well as have a very good idea of what that piece of gear is going to add or sound like when it comes time to choose a piece of gear to use. The same thing appies to plugs and includes microphones as well. If you want professional results than you need to spend the time and effort to learn them before you can go and apply them.

I've had good luck with it on overheads and drum room mics. Especially tracking to Pro Tools.

Ive used the LCA on everything from vocals, guitars to bass... ive used it on BG vocals.. stereo hoop pairs, old samples.. i like what it does... its not better than a CL1B, but it gets the job done... it has a very "MIDDY" accentuating nature (Middy= accentuates that 2K to 5K area) I try not to get more than 5 db of GR on this bad boy, beacuse it begins to sound like a phone... also a LCA is not very forgiving with bad attack and release settings... so take your time with it.... so u can know it and tame that beast...
