What's the feeling on this forum? Is USB 2.0 going to prevail or will the firewire 1394 ADC / DAC's be more popular.
I'd like to upgrade from my Edirol UA-1A and am thinking of some of the new USB 2.0 hi-speed converters with good quality mic preamps.
I would like to use my Yamaha MG12/4 mixer for monitoring only and use a quality mic preamp with firewire or USB 2.0 as my main connection to the computer.

Edirol makes the UA-1000 which is a highly recommended Usb 2.0 device. Honest reviews.
The Edirol Firewire interface looks really nice too. I can't recommened either way.
I have the Edirol DA-2496 and for a pci interface it's ok. I think the aardvark is better, but what can I do.

UA-1A is limited to 16-bit 44.1khz, is a bit brittle and hard sounding (to be expected for around $90.00?)
It was originally purchased because the system requirements suited my older PC's limitations.
I'm limited to the quality of the mic pres in my inexpensive Yamaha board.
I want to have the flexibility to connect to a lap-top without bringing the mixer along.

Beta HiFi was proof of that.
I'm in the computer business, and find USB to be irritating. The myth of PnP is just that... USB devices require drivers also. When the client doesn't have them, those drivers are just as hard to find as bus device drivers.
The wimp power capabilities of USB is another sore spot. IMO, the only way to power USB is using an active hub. It is possible for a client to horse a hot plug USB connector and get it in backwards. The power supply instantly crowbars and the machine goes down flat.
The data rate on Firewire is higher.
