Okay I have a chance to get a 2 channel Apogee Rosetta AD with the 24/96 upgrade for cheap! I'm currently running PT LE with a 002.
If I use this unit, I will of course have to do my sessions in 24/48 because I will use the rosetta's ADAT output. Is it worth it to go from 24/96 down to 24/48 just to use an Apogee?
How much better are the converters, and clock on the Apogee then the 002?

I've just been not-so-thrilled with Digi's converters. Not bad, just not... Well... The high end gets a little... Strange? Smeared?
Worked with them once or twice - never worked with them again.
Anyway, I've always been a fan of Apogee's converters. I already have a Rosetta 200 paid for (although it hasn't been released yet).
They might not be the "best" converter for this or the best converter for that, but they certainly are a great converter for just about everything IMO (IMO = In My Opinion).
That being said, there are plenty of folks out there that aren't thrilled with Apogee OR the older Rosetta stuff. However, there's a reason why they're far-and-away the most popular "pro" converters out there.

On the ADAT thing..... I could be wrong, but I think when you use the optical input as 2 channel it can be used 96khz.
If not, just use the coax SPdif.
Do you mean two channels over one ADAT cable?
I know you can use 96k with an ADAT it's called S/Mux but I thought it took two seperate ADAT cables to do it.
Can SPdif be used for 96K?

Hi there,
I don't think the quality difference lies in whether you use 44.1k or 96k. I think there is a much greater difference in AD/DA converters.
I also belive that some projects would benefit from using 44.1K through the whole project instead of converting to 44.1 before or after mastering. that's my opinion.
But then again converting is a whole other story...
But i think that you would get a BIG improovement by upgrating from any digi converter to any apogee converter!

Heya Jim! Gary from Apogee here!
Indeed, you will notice a great improvment on your stereo imaging and overall sound quality.
Basically any converter should not sound different at any sampling rate...that's the basic rule to converters. Many hit records are still being recorded at 44.1 and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in the long run.
The AD stage is the most crucial part of recording and then comes the DA. The DA stage is where you hear what is truly being sent in...if your DA is average then your recordings/mixes won't sound as they should.
There have been several people who add a good AD and then finally get a better DA and have been amazed at what they hear!
Also Digidesign doesn not and most likely will never implement S/MUX.

Hey Gary!
My snakes arrive today so my 16 X series will be rigged into a Dabgerous 2-Bus. I'll keep my AD8000SE's and use them as effects sends (the Trak2
gets used every day). So I'll end up with 32 channel's of in and out A
@44.1./24 and 24 channels @ higher sampling rates. As you probably know, when we beta tested the AD 16X, we spent a day and a half TRYING to make it sound better at higher sampling rates. We're happy to report that it sounds better than any converter I've tried at ANY sampling rates. So much for preconceptions.
Best,

You should be able to use the Rosetta with the 002 at 96k. The 002 will take two channels of 96k via SPDIF. Don't remeber how the Rosetta is configured, but if it has SPDIF out, you're there. If it has AES/BU output, then you'll need a simple and cheap converter box to change the digital signal from AES/BU to SPDIF.

(A) Function properly
But of course!
(B) Have wonderful printed & digital support documentation
May I laugh really hard now!! Just kidding....
(C) Kick ass
You will not be disapointed. So, I won't have a reason to call you. :D
Nah, you love me and want to hear my voice don't you! Hee hee
