Looks interesting, but some of the logistics are unclear. Is this a multichannel digital pipeline? Does a final mix emanate from one single computer without additional patching, or is an external mixer needed? Will there be a backup application to fetch all the extra files from the other machines to the host, or do they all have to be backed up separately?

I'd like to see something that actually came from Steinberg's mouth on this. Their site is tight-lipped at the moment.

It does seem cool but what Ang said...I'd like to hear some answers right from Steinberg's mouth on this one.
Would be nice to have a few PC's sunk up and running together like they were siamese twins!!

One thing about Steinberg they do look to the future, and they are innovative. This is a great time to own a computer, or two, or three.

Pretty close to the same thing can be done now with ASIO 2 sync (ADAT sync) using Dakota or RME cards, Cubase (Logic doesn't support ASIO 2 yet, darn it - v5.1 or so I hear) on one machine and any app and audio card combo that can at least send ADAT sync on the other machine (Paris' ADAT card does this and several Cubase/Paris users have two machines locked sample accurate). If the audio card has ADAT sync out (e.g. ADATs) you could cascade PCs/Macs, all sample accurately synced, just as you would with ADATs. If all ADAT protocols were implemented in the first audio card, you could control the whole system with a BRC, but I don't think any are programmed to respond as ADATs do for transport control.

It sounds like Steinberg is looking to simplify the cabling a little (mLAN anyone?). My question would be if they would then sell a single license for Cubase to allow multiple machines, or if you have to buy two copies and a proprietary firewire-esque cable. They may have a more elegant solution in mind though - perhaps spurred on by the ASIO 2.0 sync possibilities Cubase has now.

Well, I just came home with my new Universal Audio UAD-1 card and Poweredplug-ins and now I read this post...thanks a lot for ruining my night SS... :) Hehe...

Well...I can still take advantage of multiple PCs, but I guess (hope?) I can still take advantage of the cool things that the UAD-1 has to offer...DSP vs. Native??? Hmmmm...I have had penis envy for months looking at *all* thoseplug-insand channels the ProTools guys can run...so here's to a marriage of both worlds...DSP + Native!!!

(I'll keep y'all posted how the UAD-1 goes, especially with the beta W2K drivers...The Waves beta VST drivers are working great btw...)

as far as i understood it is, with one adatconnection fromone computer to the other you have 1 channel for synchronizing and 7 channels for audio (24/48)

you can send all the midi- and audiodata from all the computers to the mixer of one computer, and mix them there. :(

so imo it is a good begining, but it could be made even better.

on the other hand, question is if you will need it anyway, because with a dual-clawhammer-mobo which will be avaible in summer 2003 you will hardly see the cpu-meter maxed-out anymore (2-4 times the power of today's dual amd or pentium IV mobos). :D
