Okay this is gonna be kind long but I will try to set it up so its easy to use and respond to. My question is what microphones do y'all like to use. I understand that you should use try all you mics especially on vox but still there is a starting point for everyone setting up say drums. You might think wow this drum set up is great but that snare is just not quite right, then you would go maybe try a different snare mic, but the point is that there is a starting point that usually gives good results. On to the grand inquisition!

Which mic do you like to use/try first/typically get good results out of for

I.Percussion

A. overheads

B. toms
1. top head
2. bottom head (if used)

C. Kick
1. Beater side
2. Front side

D. Hi Hat

E. Snare

F. Room

G. anything else you use to mic a kit

II. Guitars

A. Cabs
1. middle of cone
2. outside of cone

B. Acoustic Guitars

III. Bass

IV. Vocals
1. Lead Vocals
2. harmony
3. Big Southern Babtist Black lady with HUGE tone! :)

Well thats not including things like brass, strings, chimes, mirimba, or stuff like that but its a starting point. You can just respond with like

I.A.1. Mercury Cougar XL
or
III Ford Escort

anyone who takes the time to respond, thanks for the info

I can tell you what I use to some degree of success--not my wish list.

overheads-km184 in x/y
Kick-MD421 highly recommended it sounds great.
Snare- Beta 57--a standard
Room- Royer R121 --sounds great
Gave up micing toms, hi-hats cause never used them.
Gave up micing beater side of kick cause I can the MD421 has alot of clean attack with some eq.
5 mics total

Electric guitar
Royer 121 8 inches in front of speaker

Acoustic guitar
Royer and KM184's for stereo

Vocals
M147--best I have
Royer

Bass guitar--mostly direct but
MD421
Beta52

That is pretty much it for me. I guess my wish list would be a little different, maybe some KM84's and an elux 251 for vocals, but other than that it works for me.

Here's mine....

Overheads - Neumann KM184's
Toms - Sennheiser 421
Kick - AKG D12 & Senn 421
Hihat - AKG 414
Snare - SM57 top Senn e609 bottom
Room - u87/'s

Guitar cabs - Sennheiser e609 (silver) & md421

Bass guitar - Shure beta 52 / AKG d112

Vocals - Vintage Neumann u87 w/ Klause Heynes modification

Acoustic guitar - AKG c60 tube

For brass I heard to use another Sennheiser. Can't remember the model but it's like a 421 except longer and skinnier (silver color) don't believe they make em any more. Maybe someone else knows what I'm talk ting about. 8-) -matty

does anyone use two mics on a guitar cab? I've seen a cardioid mic pointed right at the center of the cone, then one with the figure eight look set to pick up the outside of the cone. gonna try to draw a picture.
