bear with me if the following questions sound obvious (or dumb); that's because i've never done it or seen comprehensive instructions.
i have 2 PC's that i want to network (they are in the same room, a few feet apart) and also i want to do a "spring clean" on both of them; that means re-install OS and hardware changes.
one is a turnkey audio PC (P4)with WinXP Pro and the other is Athlon XP2000+ bought from the high-street with WinXP Home and everything installed already.
1st question: is it possible to install WinXP Pro in the Athlon? i think not, but can you confirm, coz i don't fully understand how the "activation key" works.
2nd question: how do you do a fresh and complete re-install of WinXP?
for the P4 i have the original WinXP Pro CD, and for the Athlon i have nothing but i found http://www.timesupp…"]this[/]="http://www.timesupp…"]this[/] from the company that i bought the PC from: are these instrucions correct? is it the way to go?
3rd question: will XP Home enable me to network the 2 computers or do i need XP Pro on both of them?
the thing is i want the Athlon to be the Internet machine (it IS already connected via cable modem and the Realtek RTL8139/810x family PCI fast ethernet NIC) and network the audio PC to it.
but i don't want the audioPC (P4) to have anything to do with Internet or Email, just sharing resources (files on HD's, printer).
which brings me to
the last questions: hardware-wise, how do i network the 2?
i have a Netgear FA311 NIC that i can put in the audioPC; but how do i connect it to the Internet machine (Athlon): the NIC port is taken by the cable modem :confused:

Well, the Home version will not be good for your server as it will not allow other machines to look at it...it can't run as a server as the Server service is not there!

Advantages of a FireWire network.....FAST! Very fast in fact! I can transfer a 300MB file in less than 30 seconds between computers! How's that for speed!
An ethernet connection would take you close to 3 minutes!

Also for the server machine it's best not to turn off any services, on the audio machine make sure that DNS, DHCP, TCPIP, Computer Browser, Network Log on, Network Connections, Network Location Awareness are all set to automatic. These are crucial for the machine to see the other computers on the network.
Also on the "server" machine you will make the main internet interface, the NIC, card have the "allow File sharing and internet" turned on!!

or is that 2 different protocols?
Firewire seems to be often associated with DV

The one bad thing is that you need to buy a seperate license for the WinXP Pro to install it on another machine.
Home will not do extensive networking but I believe you should be able to connect to another computer for file sharing. Usually only in one direction if I'm correct, that's the way I have my network set up as well.
The way I network them is actually via FireWire! Fast and efficient! I take ethernet and plug it into the main computer that will act as a "server"
I add a Firewire card to it...take that firewire port and put it into a firewire hub, then send firewire cables to each computer from there!
Give each computer an IP and that's it! With XP this is possible right off the bat!
The other way to do this is to have two NIC cards in the main machine and one in the other, connect the main ethernet from the ISP connection and have that obtain an IP automatically.
The second NIC card on the main machine should have it's own IP. Something like 192.168.0.1
then each machine attaching to the main computer will have 192.168.0.2 ...the last number being the difference in each machine!
The boot up disk they are talking about is for 98 First Edition or Windows ME version.
98SE, Windows 2000, and Windows XP can boot right from the CD as long as you have the BIOS set to boot off of the CDROM as the first device!
Once that is set restart with the XP CD inserted and it will say press any key to boot from CD!
Follow instructions and you're good to go!
