do i use a dual conductor cable to wire my inserts on my console: tip send, ring return...do i just attach each conductor to its own connector? if so, TRS or ts on processor end? do i split the ground between both connectors? or do i need to wire it differently?

Wiring inserts...

Console insert end get's wired like this...

TRS:

Tip=send positive

Ring=return positive

Sleeve=neutral ground

Dynamic unit end get's wired like this...

Input:

XLR/TRS

Pin 2/Tip=input positive and is connected to tip of insert TRS

Pin 1/Ring=input low and is connected to sleeve of insert TRS

Pin 3/Sleeve=input ground and is connected to sleeve of instert TRS

Output:

XLR/TRS

Pin 2/Tip=output positive and is connected to ring of insert TRS

Pin 1/Ring=output low and is connected to sleeve of insert TRS

Pin 3/Sleeve=output ground and is connected to sleeve of insert TRS

Pin 3/Sleeve should be soldered to Pin1/ring on both input and output of dynamics unit

IE: Pin 3/Sleeve on input is soldered to Pin1/ring on input and Pin 3/Sleeve on output is soldered to Pin 1/ring on output....this is called shorting to ground.

So...if the dynamics has XLR input/outputs you'll wind up with a cable like this...

TRS on one end and one male, one female XLR on the other end

Tip of TRS connects to pin 2 of male

Ring of TRS connects to pin 2 of female

Sleeve of TRS connects to pin 1 of male and female

Pin 3 of male and female get soldered to their respective pin 1's.

There are 2 cables that each have TS and both combine at 1 end(TRS)

TRS connector is for the insert, where tip is +, and ground at sleave and for the TS end that will feed your outboard gear's input. The return TS gets + wired to ring on TRS & also grounds to sleave.

If you connect to patchbay you can have better flexability.

can i just use a dual conductor cable for this connection? i'm just a little confused on the ground thing...how do i split the shield at the outboard end between two connectors?

Start with 2 XLR cables......and chop the console end's off and wire them like I said to a single TRS plug...

You could use 1 XLR cable and cut it in half if it would be long enough..it has a female and male connection...

Something is off here:

XLR/TRS

Pin 2/Tip=output positive and is connected to ring of insert TRS

Pin 1/Ring=output low and is connected to sleeve of insert TRS

Pin 3/Sleeve=output ground and is connected to sleeve of insert TRS

This should be:

XLR/TRS

Pin 2/Tip=output positive and is connected to ring of insert TRS

Pin 3/Ring=output low and is connected to sleeve of insert TRS

Pin 1/Sleeve=output ground and is connected to sleeve of insert TRS

Forgive me - but this whole topic is confusing - it's called wiring inserts tip send ring return - I've lost the plot where the XLR comes from when described like this. Are we trying to wire a ΒΌ" insert jack to XLR inputs and outputs? If so the XLR needs to have pin 1 connected to either pin 2 or 3, depending on your own preference - either is fine as long as you use this on every unbalanced in or out from balanced. So from one XLR it will connect to tip+sleeve and the other XLR will go to ring and sleeve. It's just how it's written here that confused - you have your two XLRs (one M and one F) and both cables terminate in the single insert jack. Not every mixer of course has the tip and ring connections the same way around - just to annoy you.
