Sorry if this type of question has been asked before but I use my intel Imac with Logic for recording and also as a handy tool for teaching. I have not connected my Imac to the web to keep it clean but I was wondering if it is adviseable to install Word, Excel, etc. on it or if this will be a bad idea and cause problems with the recording side of things.
Recording is the primary use of my Imac but I seem to be using it more and more for teaching - recording backing tracks, recording lessons, recording student's performances, etc. Having word especially would be handy for teaching so I was thinking of getting the office suite.
Any points of view would be greatly appreciated!

Go ahead and connect to the net. There is no such thing as mac virus. I've been connected without protection since spring of '06.

You will be just fine. Enjoy the hassle free computing lifestyle that Apple has given you.

Thanks for all the replies. I will get my Imac connected to my network I think. One of the main things that will be useful is updates. I know that I can transfer updates after downloading them from my PC (although haven't actually done this yet) but downloading them direct will be so useful.
The only problem I have is that I have a netgear wireless router (DG834G) indoors and my Imac is in my studio (converted garage) which is about 27 metres from the router. Do I need to get an 'Airport Express'? I am just worried that the distance is too great or the airport (if that is the correct piece of equipment) is not compatible with my wireless Windows PC.

Just turn on the wifi and see if it works. My router at this moment is upstairs and on the other side of the house, and the signal is very strong. You may want to add some security to your router so nobody uses your connection. Your router's documentation should tell you how to do this.

What an idiot I now feel! I never realised there was airport wireless technology built into my Imac!! Thanks VonRock - you've just enlightened me. I have visited three different PC shops and asked what I need and they have all said they think I need an airport extreme card. I went into system preferences and hey presto.. stuff started downloading!
Thanks everyone
One very happy guitarist

You have a great operating system filled with all sorts of goodies. When I found the text to speech stuff, I had to play around with it and garageband.
