When looking to buy a C414, are the vintage ones the only mics worth their beans or are the newbies just as good.

The newby 414's are a bit harsh on top and in the mids. IMO there are many new mics on the market that can stand up to any of the vintage stuff to the point that it doesn't need to be dealt with. Vintage is cool if you have time and money. New is cool if you are in the trenches. Soundelux, Neumann, BLUE...each company's line of microphones has it's perfect quality to fill any need you may be looking for, ranging from workhorse to esoteric and mind blowing. Education on the qualities of each are the key. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.
