If you are able to upgrade via the Hardware upgrade program, you won't need the software discs from your old Mix system. The Upgrade Software is a full setup. The only thing you will have to upgrade is the license on an iLok. Use your old iLok if you can. The iLok 2 is reportedly problematic for many people.

I would call their support team and haggle a deal. They should bend over backwards to get your patronage.

I never used an Ilok for my TDM. It was instances via a floppy. Any suggestion there?

No worries. Just buy a new iLok. You download the license from iLok's website.

I have a newer ilok key that I can use here Hue, but it was never for ProTools 5. They never had them back then, Follow?
I'm not sure how I can authorize PT10 with it then, and how I prove the upgrade info. Do you know what I do? Should I just upgrade to PT10 now (download it) and them it will somehow all work by doing what?? Not sure I follow? Does digi always know who you are?

Do you have your Mac still kicking around? You should be able to register the upgrade from there. I don't know if the upgrade will allow you to go from 5.1 but call support and see if they will lend you a hand.

Actually, if you still have your Digi/Avid account, they should still have all your info and you won't need the Mac at all. The upgrade is via registration.

Just looked at Avid's site again. It looks like the upgrade is from ProTools 9 only or Crossgrade from LE or MP. That could be wrong but again, I think a call to tech support is in order.

Thats the standard current iLok. Are you considering trying to upgrade as HD? Or LE? If you buy the complete PT9 it wont require anything but your registration and an iLok. But moving from the Mix System you have to HD will still require Avid or Digi based converters. Its like buying a UAD card. In order to get the DSP and the plugs you have to use their chipset and thats okay cause they're killer...I would call support and broker whatever deal you can manage. Remember they really do want you to upgrade! And the cross platform situation and answers you seek will be detailed by their Pros quite completely.

BTW I havent seen a release yet on 10......I cant imagine its even out yet but I could be wrong. I'm @ 9.0.5 with PT9 already.

Hi Dave, No, I'm not concidering HD only the software so I can play around with it and see if I can get reasonable results. I was hoping I could get an upgrade price. I like pro tools the mosts of all DAWs but not the sound so much. I want to compare Sequoia with it. Who knows though, never say never. This new system coming looks like the bomb.

I'll call Avid tomorrow and see what my options are. I should upgrade this Mix system .

PT 10 Was available as of 8PM EST yesterday. So soon? Yeah. And, the upgrade price for PT9 users who bought their software before October 1st is $300. For HD users to go to HDX it's $10000($999)! PT 10 looks very cool but hey Avid! Give us a break! We just upgraded a few months ago.

My guess is that it is their goodby kiss to the HD legacy hardware owners. The next release is 64 bits and the old hardware is left behind. My guess is that will be soon, with maybe a name like PTX1 or PT64. Actually, it's been a whole year since PT9. If it's another year before 64 bits that can't be good for Avid.

Thats interesting about the Firefox browser. Its one of the most stable and recommended by iLok. Maybe you just need the latest version. I do all my on-line upgrades through this one. It doesnt seem to like Google much.

How about that. I went on the avid site and apparently I dont qualify for the free update as I bought in earlier this year. I like PT9 so far but I'm still a beginner with this kinda stuff as far as navigation and use of the features.......I definately can record and mix!

So I'm not sure that 299.00 is something I want to part with while I'm in school with this whole thing. I feel like at this point that better conversion is going to help me more than anything. I'm think Burl at this point.

Someone over @ slutz has been talking about this for a couple of months....insider?? Seems it wasnt wishful but rather insightful or, as I said, insider.

There seem to be a few nice features for non HD users (clip gain, real time fades, new plugins), but certainly not the big step that PT9 was. You'll want to spring for the 64bit release coming next, so it's pretty easy to keep your money in your pocket on the current release. And I'd at least wait for the inevitable first bug fixes. After that, it's a gamble on how long you think it will be until the next release. Six months? A year? You're basically paying $299 to use the features for this time frame.

Just got off the phone with Austin Moss at Sweetwater (I was ordering the Aventone ribbon, Dave). They were given training on PT10 for the last few days. Their speculation was that there was a lot of 64 bit code under the hood since it can do things like access all available RAM as if it was a hard drive. So maybe the new version will be sooner rather than later. We didn't talk about PT10 for long. (He was relieved to be able to talk about anything else.)

This has been the sort of unspoken gist I've been getting with the 'insider' info as well as the press releases from Avid. Theres more to this than meets the ear.....

I did see something about they're supporting HD and Legacy owners for three years with fixes and minor upgrades and for five years for the help desk.

I'm just not certain how they're going to integrate 32 bit plug functions into a 64 bit system when it eventually becomes that. I understand that other DAW's have this figured out.

I'm really thinking seriously about the ability to use the Ram as if its a drive. I have a BUNCH of Ram that sits idle most of the time. hmmmmm......

Austin didn't have much to say of the Avantone other than (1) they were having trouble keeping them in stock and (2) he was excited to hear me do a shootout. He'd played a bit with it and said good things, but I got the idea that it was the usual Sweetwater show and tell for the sales staff. (Not knocking that. Austin was more interested in my reactions to the UA 4-710-d preamp. He had tried it for color and compression (which I think is its niche) but had not really explored it as a clean preamp. I've used it on vocals a couple of times and I thought it showed up just fine. Another shootout is to put very clean settings of the 4-710-d against the API 3124 and the Langevin DVC. Not where I'd expect it to shine, but it would be interesting to see how it stacks up.
