Hey there guys,
I was hoping someone could help me out here.
I'm in search of a good recording app so I can record a few demo tracks.
But first a little info about what I need, just so I'm not wasting anyones time:
1)I need something easy to use. My dad also tries to record a bit and anything complex goes over his head.
2)I need something with decent midi support for drums(Using addictive drums).
3)I need good VST support.
4)I need to be able to easily move audio myself on the timeline
I'll be recording live instruments and vocals. I'll be using midi for pianos, synths and drums.
Sounds simple enough, but heres my problem:
I've tried Sonar which seemed to have everything I wanted, but, the interface is waaaaaaay too complex
I got Ableton live 6 with my Line6 Toneport KB37. It fit the bill perfectly, but I could never seem to turn of the audio snap which made micro-timing adjustments impossible. Also there was no simple audio cut function.
I also have used Cubase sx3. Seems to be the middle ground but it was unstable for me and using VST seemed very round-about. I can live with the methodology, but not the stability. I hear it could be because I'm on vista.
I'm not sure what is left. I havent tried live 7 so I don't know if they fixed what I wanted and I can't bone up for Cubase 4.
Any suggestions?

Don't let all the video windows scare you, you can close all of them and only have the audio specific ones on the desktop - [[url=http://="http://i234.photobu…"]like this[/]="http://i234.photobu…"]like this[/].
A pretty penny, but worth it if you ask me!
I didn't see MIDI listed as part of Vegas though.
What about ACID though? I always thought of i as a loop sequencer. But it seems to be more than that. Is it any good?

I'm not sure what kind of midi support is included in Vegas, if any at all...
In the options in Vegas 5 (which is what I have) you can generate midi timecode, clock, and trigger events from midi tc.
Hmm, I tried searching the vegas product pages but MIDI seems nonexistant. But Sony ACID 6 seems to be a good DAW. I'll download it and see if it has any chemistry with me

The cheaper license for Reaper is limited though. They trust that you will not try to use the software for commercial purposes.
Acid Music Studio 6 has similar features to Acid 6 but is also limited in regards to simultaneous recording channels. Otherwise it works alright.
There is also Tracktion 3 which supports acidized files as well and for sure will support Addictive Drums. The Project Studio bundle is only $100-150 depending on where you buy it.

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks a lot.
Reaper is perfect for me. Simple to use and it has everything I need.
BTW, whats the dealio on the licensing? I don't plan to use it for commercial use in any way, so as I understand, I can use it without buying it? Or does that apply to the old version?

Yeah it's a 30 day trial. Funny I missed that on the site. oh well, $50 is better than some ridiculous amount for the other programs I tried.
EDIT: found out the licensing. Okay, it's free for 30 days without nagging. After that it'll nag you for 6 seconds every day/launch but it'll still remain totally active. It's $50 to remove the alerts and whatever for commercial use.
