Who wrote those "advice" articles, a 12-year old? Nice that you've been "...mixing, mastering, and recording for about 2 years". Whoever wrote those articles had a lot more balls than brains, no doubt.
Glad that you can "vouche" (douche?) for the quality of the MXL condenser mics. There's someone always wanting to unload one of those POS mics on the local CL for $50. And you certainly wouldn't want to put up one of those horrible RE-20, 421, or (God forbid) an SM58 in front of a singer. You NEED all of the crappy artifacts that a poorly-treated room (with that POS no-fire-safety-rated foam you advertise) that a Chinese LDC will pick up, fer sure, dude...
If you could READ, you would have a lot better insight to the business and not rely on the GC salesperson/madam to tell you what to buy. Then that would help with miserable spelling (it's "whether" not wheather, "vouch" not vouche, and I stopped there, it was too painful to continue).

Wow, you must be a really unsatisfied person lol....... first of all those sites are intended for beginners, people who have an interest in making music and have never done it before, its not intended for EXPERIENCED persons so yes the instructions need to be explained in the simplest form to where even a 12 year old could understand. Not everyone is able to drop 10000 dollars on a new home studio. THATS THE POINT OF THOSE SITES. Wait a minute! Its all clear at last. All these years I've been doing it wrong. I'm gonna have to sell my mic collection and get me some of those MXL thingys. Especially the ones "specifically designed" to record instrument sound. I have a lot of instrument sound here in my "extra room" so I'll be setting up shop there. What kind of 'blankets' should I get? Electric ones? Horse blankets? Security blanket?

Now as a curious type of person I have a couple of questions. I sure am glad I have someone with lots of experience to answer them.errr.....won't some of the sound simply pass through the blankets and bounce off the walls anyway? I read that somewhere. And what about the corners of my "extra room"? Don't bass frequencies gather there? These walls are nice and straight and the corners are square. Is this a problem?

Of course I could buy some of that foam stuff your selling, but I would worry about fire....Its probably okay though. I've got advice from someone with a couple years experience to guide me.

the spelling thing is a tell tale youngster sign/thing...they just don't care..its kind of sad really....I see it all the time even in professional engineering environments....when I have to check spec reports or technical instructions...I get so disgusted....when I redline or correct them they chuckle and are not embarrassed at all by how ignorant that looks on something technical....sad....very sad...I would like to send them all back to grammar school....

FWIW I actually own 2 copies of TuneUp Utilities....2007 version ($29.95) and I just recently updated to the 2010 version ($19.95) and it is a great product. The free demo version which I'm sure he was talking about as the "torrent not bootleg" is just that....free trial demo version....but doesn't have the full paid for version capabilities....

Geez, when I first posted my response to this poor guy's original posting, some sort of pop-up said that my post was being held so that it could be approved by a moderator. I thought, " Man, I'm gonna get busted for this. So long, RO!" I guess some of the words I used were flags, understandable, but I felt guilty!

Mastering in 3 EZ steps:

1. Find an experienced Mastering Engineer.

2. Kneel.

3. Pray for his guidance.

Repeat step 1, 2, and 3 until you have all his qualifications and experience. Should take 10-20 years.

As an artist, I (usually) know better than to tread on Holy Ground. When I do tread, it's an accident that I try and learn from after licking my wounds. Suggest you do the same.

(But seriously...lighten up on the newbs. We can learn, too! If he lacks the required humility, he will be forced out of the industry anyway.)

As far as taking it easy on newbs... I think you'll generally find that RO IS easy on newbs! That's one of the things that I really do like about RO. There is a huge tolerance for folks who just don't know.

Most of the road dogs and old farts in the ranks of RO, spend huge amounts of energy trying to educate and support newcomers to the forum and the recording arts. (...and they do this for free, too!)

The reason that poor widdle xplicit caught a rash of it, is because he knows squat level about the recording process, mastering, gear and acoustics, but has big brass nads implying that he's da' shiz.

We simply called him on it... that's all.

I've been at this most of my life, part-time, and now full-time... and I've barely scratched the surface of what all there is to know.

I've learned by trial and error, steppin' on my own pee-pee and steppin' right in it. I've had my ballz busted PLENTY. Some was deserved, some not... but such is the nature of this business.

If you never flown a bunch of boxes over 30 feet in the air, never worked with a national crew, never built a real studio or never worked on a full scale project, you have no idea how real the pressure is. There's lives at stake and serious money involved. That's a game changer.

As I said, if the kid can take his spankin'/wrist slap from those that DO have more experience, and a better idea of what it REALLY takes... and come out the other end with a decent attitude... he'll be all the better for it. But as I previously stated, that don't typically happen... so he'll likely tuck tail and run away.

I'm an old fart artist, been doing music all my life starting at age 5 with my first piano concert. Debuted professionally at 14, toured nationally before college, and toured globally from 1989-1995.

There's an old saying: you can be an artist or an engineer. The RO website is populated mostly by engineers. If you are an artist you must learn to deal with them carefully. They are very good at what they do. Most of them can't make new music for crap, but they can make your music sound great. Artists and engineers are a team, and each team member must be careful not to step on the others.

If you are an artist, then do what I do: Concentrate on creating new music. Make stuff people actually want to listen to. And learn engineering as a means to an end. Learn engineering so you can communicate and appreciate the engineers. Learn it so you can set up your own studio for your private use. But if you are an accomplished artist, you won't have time to learn enough to make a pro studio for hire.

If you are an engineer, then learn to play an instrument and sing! THIS MEANS ALL OF YOU! Even if you don't write new songs, learn the old classics. Learn some Beatles songs on guitar and voice. Record yourself and play in time / sing in tune. Learn to appreciate the artist. I've been trashed out by two engineers who basically thought "How dare an artist have ideas about his own art." I fired one of those guys, the other quit on his own. Both were replaced within hours.

The overwhelming majority of the engineers I've worked with are "professionals", even if only part time workers. Their pleasant attitude made up for their lack of accomplishments in the field of the Arts or the Sciences.

An artist can learn engineering, and an engineer can learn artistry. The problem is that human beings don't live long enough to be really good at both of those things. It would take 2 lifetimes to get "professional" at both of them, and we don't have that option, reincarnation notwithstanding.

There is much more to learn and always will be. That's half the fun, right there.

Now, please excuse me, I'm actually taking a break from a session. I'm working on my latest soon-to-be-rejected smash hit!

It is my opinion, you don't become excellent at anything until you have 10,000 hours into it. I stopped counting at 20,000 hours and I am just starting to get the hang of it. And that is only with the wiring lol.

I feel for newbies and I know all of us know what its like to be one. We all started out with a cable in our hand. And we all learned our skills by listening. Over the last 12 years here, we have always been very tolerant, if not the most! I think the best thing going on recording.org is we don't accept BS here and never have.
If there is one inclination of BS... stomp it out. It makes us a better pro audio community. If the members takes offense to a majority opinion.. And begins to push, those types of members aren't worth keeping around. Best they go to the less pro sites plagued with all the shills and BS.

Everyone is welcome to read, but you cannot even register here anymore unless you know something about recording. I may in fact increase the level of understanding.
