I don't like to sound like I would in this posting but I'll give it a try. So I heard some preamps sound really good and I was wondering if my main source of recording is already an interface with integrated pre's and I wanted to connect another pre ( a better one) into any of them do I really get the sound of the first or second pre? I am not sure if this will sum the gain in both pre's and how to achieve the sound of the secondary preamp.

Thanks in advance.

Some interfaces have a TRS input for line level signals that bypasses the pre completely. With other you use a trim pot to turn the pre down so there is no gain. It's still in the circuit, but has much less effect on the sound than it does when it is being used to amplify. So you can still get almost all of the benefit of the better preamp.
