I would not get it, the lowest spec Macs are much more powerful.

A macbook pro or Mac mini has more cpu power.

The only way a G5 can compete is if it's equipped with a PT|Hd system.

thank for the info guys. Unfortunately, I've already purchased the power mac g5. I plan to use this platform as a stepping stone to learn the ropes and practice recording techniques. If the passion grows and my skills and recording artists request my services, I'll invest in a bigger/stronger system. Thanks for the info. So far everything is running smooth (fingers crossed).

Software will be your biggest issue, look for apps, or plugins, that are Universal Binaries (contains installers for PPC and Intel CPUs), otherwise checkout Craig's list and eBay for used/older software.

My G5 is in the office simply because it wouldnt do higher track counts or more than a few plugs. Its a dual core 2.0. 5.5 gigs of ram and a 1ghz bus speed. I ran Protools 8 LE on it and it was quite slow and buggy. So it lives in the office where its a great computer still. Although in the last year, a lot of apps have new version that it wont run and that gets frustrating as most apps need the intel processors for Mac for any kind of decent upgrades. My flash player is so out of date it wont play most of the videos available these days, but I cant download a newer version simply because of the architecture of the machine.

It IS a great typewriter though.

I've got a UAD pci card if you want to buy it. Its the basic UAD1. Great plugs even then. It wont run on my newer Mac in the studio as its all pcie slots.

Good info Dave. One of the reasons I push people toward newer machines.
