i want to go from bass amp direct out (mesa walkabout) into a b32876236einger mixer.

do i want to go into the pre-amp line input or the channel insert in the back?

i bought a female XLR to 1/4 TRS cable
except it is a 'mic impedance matching transformer' cable
- brings it from 250hz to 50,000hz

i saw a cheaper xlr-TRS at the store, but it looked kind of flimsy
is that what i wanted anyway?

For what you want: Yes you did indeed buy the wrong cable, but you already knew that. What you want is a male XLR to TS or TRS, I'm not sure that it matters with a mono source. You also don't want to buy into anything that can be described as 'cheap' or 'flimsy', get your money's worth.

For what I recommend: If you are recording a bass why don't you get a DI box and connect take the XLR to your mixer and the bypass to your amp. Then mic your amp and run that to your mixer as well. From there you have two tones to play with and you can blend/tweak them as desired.

On another note: Why is everybody buying Behringer mixers nowadays?

Actually, what you want is to connect to the ring of the TRS jack. This is likely to require a custom cable job.

Tip=send (from the mixer)
Ring=return (to the mixer)
Sleeve=common

You certainly do NOT want some impedance conversion job. Straight wire. Your impedance was changed when you went into the Walkabout. It is now line level.

could i just use an xlr to xlr onto the mixer pre-amp?
or should i get the xlr to 1/4 on the mixer pre-amp?
or should i get the xlr to 1/4 on the mixer insert?

my friend isn't using the berhrehe mixer so he is lending it to me.

its close, but i suppose BEHRHnerhfgg&#&6ndf mixer is better than no mixer (although i am sure some of you will disgree!)

"could i just use an xlr to xlr onto the mixer pre-amp?"

Yes you could.

"or should i get the xlr to 1/4 on the mixer pre-amp?"

This will also work, perhaps marginally better.

"or should i get the xlr to 1/4 on the mixer insert?"

This is the best option. So long as you've got a signal on the RING and you throw away anything coming off the TIP.

If you're still going through the preamp, it'll make little if any difference.

If it's bypassing the preamp and going to a line level input (which could be a combo jack with the XLR mic level input - but so long as it doesn't go through the actual preamp which does the boosting) then you're definitely better that way.

The Walkabout has a Direct Out that sends the tone of the Tube Pre-amp, EQ, and Effects Loop to an XLR jack with a ground lift. If your mixer has an open XLR input, seems like a perfect fit to use a standard XLR female to XLR male mic cable.
