Judging by the sound of this song..What equipment should I look into.. I Have a PreSonus Firestudio, sm 57's, and an AKG perception 220. I have Sonar with Waves diamond.
The song is Hello.

Really? You want a judgement call based on a song that has been crunched and destroyed by myspace compression?
The Presonus has decent converters. The SM57 will never hold you back. AKG makes excellent microphones (and headphones), but the low end introductory ones are not very well regarded.

Plus, you know we are just going to tell you to learn how to work the equipment you have better. This site is known for that. I mean asking a question like that makes you sound like you don't know what you are doing, so maybe you should save your money and learn your gear better.

edaub1,
I like your tune "Hello", good work. There is a little timing issue at 3:33 when your drumming to 16ths but its minor. I think you should try to post it on soundclick. Mp3s at 120mbps sound way better than myspace. Generally when I post on here I use soundclick it just sounds so good.
"Mp3s at 120mbps" 1.21 MEGABITS! (128Kbps :P)

We've gone totally off topic too.
Mixing tips are very dependent on the mix, and as for gear, we can't pluck random names out of a hat. Acoustic treatment is maybe something to look into, unless you are in a large room.

Seriously Codemonkey, your humor, insights, and visage are a blessing.
To the OP -
Most of the actual suggestions given are quite good.
I have problems telling you what to get b/c I have one song to work with. I'd have to hear a bunch of your songs to even make a guess as to what gear to improve on. Guitarfreak is right in that things like mic placement, gain staging, and mix techniques play a HUGE role in the finished product.
If you have the money to blow on a nice preamp or mic, do your research, and you won't be disappointed.
Facts:
Making a noticeable improvement in the quality of your signal chain at any point will yield better results. Making a noticeable improvement of your whole signal chain will yield much better results.
Never forget the factor of "operator error" though. That nullifies both of those facts. I know it's the #1 limiting factor in my work.
Well all of what I know... OK, modesty aside, 90% of what I know
Well all of what I know...
OK, modesty aside, 90% of what I know, is from these forums - with a little bit of practice thrown in.
And I agree with soapfloats - I can get acceptable drum sound from a $20 mic, and another mic (on bass drum) that barely works. Sure as hell ain't pro gear...

I think your next purchase should be a cd duplicate machine so you can make a shitload of copies cause that song ROCKS!!!!!!
