Hmm, is it the budget mic for the kick and the nice mic for the overhead, or the other way round?

I get the impression it's two budget-but-nice mics for both purposes.

Find a Shure Prologue 12H in a rubbish bin, hit the grill lightly with a hammer a few times, and you have a "great" kick mic. Keep it a foot away and crank the low EQ.

Then get an AT BrandX xm5 mic and put it a few feet above the toms, pointed at the snare, add to the highs, and low mids, and boom:

The 12h, err... I got mine out of a bin and it sounds like it's worth $10.

$10 on a mic is like paying 30 cents for a burger. What do you expect? Something of value? No.
You end up with something garbage and you're still out of pocket.

Same on the XM5. They just, suck.

Since "budget" is an abstract term, what you really want is an SM58 - $100. Two if you want one for the kick drum. Odds are you do.
$200 for a pair of mics which are the industry standard for recording guitar amps, drums, singers, anything.

Option 1) You spend $200 now and you'll have mics you'll want to use for all eternity. And they'll last about that long too.
Option 2) You spend $50 now and you'll spend $100's on improving it. And it'll still be garbage.

I found out the hard way. So did a lot of other people who didn't have $200 to spend on 2 mics.

Find yourself a user pair of SM57's. Buy yourself a couple of foam pop filters. That's all you need for the next few years. Should be able to do this for under $150 US.
