Hello! My first post on the site (been lurking for a while). The community here seems to be very helpful and knowledgeable, so I thought this would be a great place to seek help. I'm having some sound issues with my home recording. There is some "crackling" and "popping" sounds during the recording of my vocals. I will give you some information and a sound clip to help narrow this issue down. Here is my sound clip showing the crackle/popping. SOUND TEST HERE (About 7 secs long) My Current Setup AT2020 Microphone Xenyx802 Mixer UCA222 Audio Interface I was using 3.5mm Mini-Audio-to-RCA Cable to connect prior to having the Audio Interface. I'm currently using Two 1/4" Male to Two RCA Male Unbalanced Cable with the Audio Interface and still having the same cracklings issue. Note: I have only had this equipment for a few months. The mixer and microphone were working fine (no audio interface) as far as I remember there was no issue with crackling. I'm not sure when this problem even came into play to be honest. I bought the UCA222 Audio Interface because I thought that the built-in sound card on my computer might have been the issue (causing the crackle). Even after getting the UCA I'm having the same issue with crackling. I have plugged the same setup into my laptop and the issue still is present. The plug n play drivers with the UCA222 had a constant hum so I upgraded the drivers from the Behringer site. The humming is gone now, but I still have the crackling. I know I could always edit out the noise, but it sounds like crap when the crackling is during my speech. I have tried using both 2.0 and 3.0 USB ports, different ports etc. The Mic seems fine, I've never dropped it or anything and my XLR is high quality. I have tried different ports/hookups on the mixer as well. I'm at a loss on what to do at this point! I just want to record with no crackling :(! Personally I've tried everything I could think of. I need help :(. P.S. I'm using Audacity to record, but the crackle comes up on other records such as FRAPS and Windows Recorder.

I'm not sure what you mean by overload the preamp? If you could be more noob friendly wording that I might understand haha. I have tried numerous drivers from them and I even downloaded another audio recording program that was compatible with ASIO4ALL to try it out since audacity doesn't work with it (as far as I know). The results were all n all the same. Still have the same annoying popping/crackle.

At this point, you need to check every step the audio takes to reach the pc and become a file on your hard drive and then going back to your speaker and to your ears

If you are confident about your mic, cable, be sure your not using Phantom power if your mic does not need it.
The preamp is the first amplification being apply to the mic signal which is very low voltage being push to a record level. You mixer uses a knob name Trim to pre-amplify. If this signal is to loud it will distort. then the level at which you send the signal to the audio interface could be to high (check the input levels in audacity) if you pass 0db that's not right.

Also check in audacity, there is for sure a place to setup the audio buffer, test higher settings..

I'm still having the issue after banging my head on a wall for days. My next step was to buy a new microphone. This is the one I'm going to replace the AT2020 with [[url=http://[/URL]="link removed SM58-LC - Cardioid Dynamic Mic SM58-LC B&H Photo Video[/]="link removed SM58-LC - Cardioid Dynamic Mic SM58-LC B&H Photo Video[/]

Not only is it a new mic, it's a different type. Switching from the condenser to a dynamic. I will update when it comes in and I test it out. If this doesn't fix the problem I'm going to buy a new mixer and try that. After that I have NO idea what to do, because I will have switched out everything 1 by 1 after that. I've read so many different things it COULD be, but nothing is fixing the problem so far. I'm just going to assume it MAY be the equipment and try that out.

I know you're pissed but, take a break and think before buying any gear !!! Your in a mood of buying anything to get it work and you'll do wrong choices for sure..

Is the mic cracking when you listen to it live.. without the computer ? If so, it is possible it is your mic, console or wires, or electricity fluctuation.. who knows... but if it is not cracking live, it's not the mic.

I tell you, 80% of my past problems where comming from the computer. Wrong audio driver, wrong video drivers (yes it can make a difference) chipset and sata controler are very critical.

Then audio drivers and ajustments are the most common problems happening. Did you check the audio settings
How to set up Audacity - Audacity Manual, check different audio drivers MME, WDM, Asio..

I don't use Audacity.. but there must be a place where you setup the sample rate and buffers..

Now time to throw us some specs.. laptop, desktop, CPU, Mem, HDD speed. Is it full or fragmented.. Everything counts !!!thumb

I just listened to it live and still heard some pops, but not as much as through the computer. I don't get how my audio drivers would matter since I'm using a audio interface?

My computer specs are

Intel i5-3570k CPU @ 3.40GHz

8GB Corsair RAM

2x SLI EVGA Geforce 660 Graphics Cards

Asus Maximus Formula V Motherboard

Windows 7 64bit Home Premium

Desktop computer that I built personally

Using a SSD + HDD combo. SSD holds the OS and program files while all my media and games on the HDD 7200 speed btw.

Why I'm ruling out the computer or drivers etc is the fact that I hooked the same setup to a new laptop and had the SAME exact issue. It has to be either the mic or mixer imo.

If you still got pops, it might be the mic, the preamp too loud, wire and other stuff we talked about. Drivers always mather, because they state how your computer will communicate with peripherals. If you go to Japan and ask your sushi in the wrong or vague laguage, you might get different results than you expected... ;)

I had that snapping noise once and quickly determined it was caused by ProTools and some other device fighting over who was providing the clock. It was the first time I'd used this combination connected via fiber optic Lightpipe. I designated one as master, the other as slave, and the noise was eliminated. Do you know who's providing the master clock? (Audacity, or your interface) It may not be a matter of just making one the slave; having one (or the other) in-charge of the clock may run better.

Buffer settings, clock settings, driver settings.... ALL of that matters.

Good luck.

Vuxxy,

Did you try unplugging your laptop and recording while on battery power only?
Did you turn off Anti-virus while recording?
Did you load the Asio 64bit USB drivers for W7?
After doing so, does W7 see the Behrry in the sound properties as a Sound Card option?
Do you have Audacity set to Mono, and at the same bit rate and sample rate as the Behrry output (ie. 16bit/ 44.1KHz or 24bit/48KHz)?

Just doing some out-loud thinking with you.

Edit: I re-read your post and see that you tried it on both the PC and a laptop.

Hey guys just thought I would stop back by to let you know whats up. So I got the Microphone I previously mentioned and returned the AT2020, it seems the mic was the problem after all. The new one I have works 100% fine no pops or cracks.

If you have the problems I had and are using a condenser mic, it might be the mic! Use a spare mic or do a return like me. Thanks for the helps guys!

You are getting the crackling when pluggin headphones into the mixer, without being hooked up to the computer? IF so you are either overdriving the preamp, over driving the output bus, bad cables, bad mixer, or bad mic.

whenever I have had problems the first thing I do is check all input/output levels to make sure I'm not clipping (to much signal) somewhere in the audio path.
If that's not the problem, borrow a different mic from someone and plug it in, see if it makes a difference.
if that doesn't fix it take the mic to a different mixer (sometimes GC or someplace like that will let you plug in your mic into one of theirs) test the mic out with a different mixer.

i had problems with a mixer that did strange things when the phantom power was on. Also make sure you have clean AC power into your systems mains. (outlets)

oops didn't catch that last post.
