Hey everyone,

I've been looking to replace my TR8's and I can get distributor/rep pricing on Tannoy and KRK products.

I'm looking for an accurate monitor and was thinking either the V6 or V8. (I have a small room). Since I don't have any experience with Tannoy...do they have a really nice monitor?

Thanks!

I like the Tannoy System 8's over the KRK V8's. The KRK's sound more like decent home stereo speakers to me, hyped in the lows and a little lacking in detail. The Tannoy Reveal's were pieces of crap, but have been revamped, so I don't know about the new ones. The System 8's are the concentrics with the tweeter inside the woofer, and it looks like they've been discontinued and replaced by the Precision series.

if you seek something in the price range of a pair of v6 or v8s, then i say none of them... only because you get 'em cheaper, what is the point of cheaper and non satisfactory...?

but as usual, you are located in the states, so you have dozens of shops who carry any type of monitor, go and listen!!...., personally i would buy genelecs or dynos... but really that does not mean a thing, point is that they are the monitors i have worked most with over the last 10-12 years, so i know them inside out! (considering the room is "neutral" -- always a very important factor for the propper function of ANY monitor!), so your ears / needs and expectations have to be satisfied...

and why do you seek for a real decent monitor if you like ns10s anyway, as i remember from previous posts of you, you like ns10s, right??? please don't get me wrong, really no offense, i am just curious, as i do not understand this contradiction...

what i mean is if ns10s doing the job for you stick to what works....

I have owned both KRKs and Tannoys. I have also worked on both at numerous studios and broadcast facilities. You are speaking about the difference between "West Coast sound" and "British sound". Very different depending on your application? Having worked on and used both, after awhile I become acclimated to the monitors at hand. When it comes down to personal preference, I still own a pair of KRKs for my small near fields.

I love my country. I love being an American. And I love my American-made monitor speakers best. It is the sound that I have grown up with and am most accustomed to. Now if " accuracy" is what you seek? It's hard to beat the self powered Meyer HD 1s. Now you can't play those quite as loudly as you can a pair of JBelves, you know the ones that Santa Claus' little helpers make in California? And/or that Danish company Genlec who are now making some more affordable self powered speakers.

Above all, listen, listen, listen. Take your favorite CD that you know the best with you when you go to audition monitors. But beware! Monitors that may sound initially " best" to you, you may end up with ear fatigue, after hours worth of monitoring. This happened to me along with other engineers at an NBC owned and operated, number one station, in Washington DC. The " Chief Engineer" liked ADC Speakers and purchase them for us in our new Neve control room. All of the engineers that had to use them, regularly blew out the tweter fuse and we all found them very fatiguing to listen to. After numerous objections to them, we ended up installing an old pair of JBL 4311s. Then we could truly rock-and-roll and everybody was happy thereafter!

Good luck on your selections!

Hey Art -

In response to your question, personally I like the Tannoys. A lot! Tannoy has made some amazing speakers and still does. The system 8s are great speakers.

If I recall right, you are working at banjo mart now - they have the Event ASP8s. Those are some amazing monitors. You might want to consider them too.

BTW - what don't you like about the TR8's? I find them to be a very good and usable monitor (better than most anywhere near their price point.)

I'm wondering the same thing. I don't see you getting that much of a step up from the TR8s with either of the monitors you mentioned. If I were planning a monitor upgrade, I'd save up longer and make a bigger jump (genelec or dynaudio maybe). My 2 cents.
