I have been trying to decide if I want to step into the Digidesign circle ( looks good on a business card ) or if I should mix and match for the sake of versatility, ( Cubase or similar with selection of appropriate hadware ). My questions are simple ones.
Will Pro Tools help me to do better work ?
Will clients care what I use if the finished product sounds good ?
Is digidesgn's hardware any better or worse than other commercial gear ?
Is it worth spending three times as much just to be able to say you use Protools? Does it make good business sense?

There have been some interesting debates on that topic recently at some of the Cubase forums: http://www.steinberg.net/en/ps/support/forums/ and news://alt.steinberg.cubase. You can probably guess the general drift of the opinions, but there are also some fairly good insights on ProTools.

I was in your decision positon back in December. Same basic questions. I wetn with Nuendo and like it a bunch. v2 is due out anyday and it will be a free upgrade. It sounds very good and is intuitive/logically set up for the most part. The main thing that resolved the decision then was that Nuendo will convert files to PT format so you are compatible with the PT studios. Nuendo plus the UAD-1 card is a very powerful daw. the money you save will buy assets like great mics, micpres and cables that really matter now and that will hold value for years.
