so I just got a Zoom H4N but so far every recording I make through the h4n into Cubase just sounds choppy and skips around. It sounds perfect through the headphones as I record but as I listen back it doesn't sound right. I don't understand what the problem is. I haven't done much recording before and I have never had this problem.
It is connected to my HP PC through the USB. I'm also using Windows Vista.

anyone who's familiar with the zoom h4n and has an idea why this is happening it would be very much appreciated.

I can try to give you advise, although I am more of a Mac addict than a PC.

How are you loading your recordings into Cubase?

Have you tried to load recordings through a USB card reader instead of through the USB output on the device?

Does the device have internal memory? If so it will show up as a drive on your computer.

You must load the data from the H4N into cubase. Perhaps the files are a single track in folders, ideally you would have one folder with your takes in it. Depends how your file folders are created by the H4N.

Try to import one track at a time from cubase.

Documentation could be an annoyance with the device.

Just make sure all of your tracks are locked in alignment at the beginning of the song.

Why do you ask us? jg's advise may solve your concern.

This is a specialized function, be sure to read the manual carefully. I know that I have seen reports that the device has poor documentation.

You should call zoom tech support, they are the only people that may know how to address your concern.

Device drivers??

Not to feed off of this post topic for help but im at my wits end and its probobly something simple. But...when i plug my Zoom h4n into my computer and open Cubase Le5, Cubase does not recognize my device. I go to set up device driver and Zoom is not an option....its like its not even there. Can someone help me with this issue? Id greatly appreciate it! :)

I could be wrong but I think you are thinking the H4N is an interface or something more than it is. I Don't think the H4N is anything more than a really cool portable recorder. I have one and love it, but I only use it to record but, if I want to import a song I do it saving the files on the computer and then import the file(s) manually into the DAW.

Is there something that I'm missing here or I think our friend here is confused what it will do?

In *theory* the h4n should work an audio interface too, it is actually designed to do so.

sesroh: make sure that the sampling rate you have set for recording on the zoom matches the sampling rate of your cubase project; switching the sample rate in cubase alone will not switch the sampling rate at which the zoom is set to. Note, as an Audio interface it can only work at 4.1khz and 48khz

GD: Sorry if this is too obvious, but just in case:

connect USB cable
on the zoom go to: menu / usb / audio I/F / CONNECT

hope this is of help

You're welcome! I've been one-sidedly benefitting from the heaps of knowledge that everyone else on here shares so generously for a long time, so i'm only glad to FINALLY be able to share something myself for once; even if it's net worth is around 0.02 cents compared to what ive gained from others

I also have a question regarding the zoom H4n - sorry to also feed! But it seems the zoom has suddenly stopped saving the files in the folders? Or at least when I press the folder button it says empty? Also it started deleting the files after recording - suddenly they were just gone! I really don't understand? I have been going through the menu again and again but I can't find anything that seems like it should be turned on/off - I also tried fac resetting the system and it helped in the way that the recently recorded files have remained. But still they're not in the folders? And I lost a lot of good recordings? Does anybody know what I am talking about and what I could do? (And best: could my lost files be hidden somewhere in the system?)

I have a Zoom H4n Recorder. I have had it just over a year and it has worked fine until recently. I am noticing a loud buzz in my recording that makes it almost inaudible. I have upgraded the firmware and swapped SD cards and still getting the same result. Any suggestion or do I need to send it in for repair?

Tell us a bit more about when you get the buzz. Do you have phantom power enabled on the XLR inputs even when recording via the built-in mics? Is the amplitude of the buzz affected by the record level controls? Do you get the buzz only when using the built-in mics, or also on signals coming in through the combo XLR/jack inputs? Does the buzz disappear if you plug an unconnected jack plug into the 3.5mm stereo jack input on the rear of the unit? Do you hear a buzz when replaying tracks recorded before you noticed the problem on new recordings? Do you get the buzz when using the H4N as a real-time audio interface (i.e. not using the flash card)?
