There are times when I wonder why people can't make good recordings on the least expensive, entry level devices? There are times when I wonder why people can't make good recordings when they only have the mere basics of equipment? Here is a couple of examples of basic & simple all mixed live on the fly. That poor little fly never knew what squashed it.

These mixes were all done while sitting directly in front of the band with a pair of KOSS Pro4AA's. In fact the one from New Zealand was with my equipment on top of the bass guitar amplifier and be standing right there since I only had a couple of 15 foot cables I took with me to the New Zealand.
No plugins were used. No computers were used. This is simply the basics while keeping it simple.
I'm more simple & sometimes just basic.

Yeah this is a fantastic band which makes all the difference. I spend much less time when I am mixing a great band compared to a band that is not super tight. When I first started to do live sound in big venus I had a really tight band that was a gospel act come in. They were used to playing big venues and tiny ones with no sound guy or really bad sound guys etc. They could adapt to anything. When I got them sounding great through the fronts I noticed about 20 min in I was doing nothing for fader rides etc. They worked it big time. I later recorded this band and it was some of the easiest mixes I've done.

Take a Good studio quality Sony CD recorder with balanced ins - used as two mono channels.
Ch1 add a cheap Aphex 107 pre-amp / and very affordable Rode NT5 room mic
Ch2 mix in an Aux Mix [post] from a little Soundcraft console of the 10 used channels
- mix early then leave untouched until it comes to a boil [kick/snare/hihat/rack tom/floor tom/bass/guitar/3 vocals]
No soundman. Just add 3 pc. band with a combined 100+ years of experience that can manage their own dynamics and let simmer. Then when you get home remix the two mono signals to balance dry board mix and room mic. No frills and no studio slight of hand.
It's far from perfect, but it's a bar band for cryin' out loud. Simple & basic & real home cookin.

It doesn't need to get any more exciting or organic than this. That's another reason why I specialize in live. Far from perfect must mean that you didn't make any money on this one?

Couple of reasons that people don't record this way more often:

1. Most bands can't play together this well.
2. Most vocalists "need" more pitch correction than this one.
3. A lot of people want to make records that don't sound anything like a live band.
