Hi to all.

I'm new to this group, I want to know exactly where or who can answer to at least 100 questions about DAW's, Is it here?
Is there a complete pc-daw knowledge base?

Read the posts going on in here!!!! Yes, this is the ultimate place to get your mind filled with sooo much knowledge on computer based audio recording that you'll forget you started using computers to record and not build and tweak them!! lol!
Gee, I'm not bitter I went that path..or am I?
Ask away man, if I cant answer it someone else will chime in. Dont be afraid to ask ANY question. I've even posted questions in here..you can never stop learning!

Ok:

thanks, let's start with system config:

P III/933 Mhz (Intel motherboard 815 and chipset)
256 RAM
three physical HD's (10MB, 40MB and 10MB)
audio card :Gina (20/44.1)
Scsi card: Tekram
MIDI/SMPTE card: 2 Port/SE (musiq quest)
OS: win 98 SE
---

I've made a collection of (win98) tweaks to obtain a "better performance", I'd like to know if all of them are needed?, is there any other trick?

tweak 1 virtual memory set to a fixed number wich is RAM * 2.5= 640 MB

tweak 2 Auto insert notification for CD= off

tweak 3 check "Disable Write Behind Caching For All Drives"

tweak 4 "Read Ahead Optimization" set to none

tweak 5 "Typical role of this computer" set to network server

tweak 6 using sysedit for editing the SYSTEM.INI file, "MaxFileCacheSize" and "MinFileCacheSize". set to 2048.

well, Question 1, when all of this "non standard" settings are running you should have a reliable pc/daw?

best and thanks

Wow...98 tweaks...how ancient!! lol!!
Are you saying you still have an ISA midiquest card? It still works ok? lol!
First of all....you dont need to add so much VM..it's should only be 1.5 times the amount of Ram installed...not 2.5
Second..dont put more than two physical hard drives on the IDe controllers. When you put two drives on one cable it cuts the bandwidth in half for that controller bus. Two hard drives and two CDrom's is the limit. Get yourself an ATA100 controller for the other IDE drive.
Once you do the other tweaks you should have a pretty well tweaked out system..
I personally never messed with the VM Cache in the system files...always worked for me without it..but to be honest I wouldnt go back to 98 if you asked me to. But then again with that MidiQuest card you probably have no choice in the matter!

gary
If you're doing Raid then it's fine..I usually reccomend that you always put your system drive on teh primary controller. There are times when you'll find that the OS is not found when booting off of a different path than what it's normally told to!
Like SCSI, I've seen sooooo many times when a system wont boot off of a SCSI drive but will always boot off of the Primary. It's a cleaner path, yes a SCSI or Raid is faster but leave the horsepower for your audio data stream..this way the OS and apps dont bog down the path for your audio pull in any way.
