I've heard quite a few test trax from friends that bought these and while they're certainly not of Royer or RCA quality, the effect is totally retro and very cool. Definitely a classic sound and the grill can be modded to open up the high's even further. I've been considering one myself but have other priorities right now.
But from the test trax I've heard so far they are well worth the money if you're thinking of giving one a try.

Wow. I am interested in a ribbon but the budget isn't there right now for the standards and I really didn't think this would be of enough quality at that price to really consider it.
Go to the Yorkville Sound website. Check out the highlighted new gear. The Apex ribbon mic. is there. It has a "797" type of hardware/accessories package...BUY IT!!!! For

That mic actually streets for $229 at musiciansbuy.com and I'm pretty sure it's the same mic as the Nady which is verifiably the same ribbon mic as the one Pacific Pro Audio is offering right now. The manufacturer is chinese. Same mic, same electronics, same ribbon, etc. There are just very simple and subtle differences cosmetically. They all street at around $229.

I smell an industry rep ....
Oh bite me, Foster. Get a grip. I think you're smelling your own bs buddy.
If you're nice to me I'll let you play with my new EH 12AY7 tube mic pre. It's absoutely rocks.
I have the tapeop ribbon, same factory, sounds great. I have never used a royer or an RCA but so far I'm liking this ribbon and it made my vocie sound pretty good, which is a MAJOR accomplishment. Needs a lot of gain, but I understand that most ribbons do.
These mics are actually made in europe. I have their website somewhere. I believe the company is Thomman (or something like that. I purchased 2 of their tube mics. the mics are called T-bone. I got the retro's. They're square bodied similiar to the blue bottle-neck with the capsule on top. they have outstanding clairity. If anyone want the website reply to this post. Maybe we could organize a group buy. I would love to get some more now that I know how good they are. Now that I think about it these mics might be made in Germany

If it sucks, I'll sell it on Ebay. If it REALLY sucks, I'll record some destitute local band with it, and write it up for TapeOp.
And, if it really, really sucks, it's sure to be a hit record.
If I get lucky, and it is a decent mic, sounds like I should mod it until it really, really sucks. I'm sure I could figure some out using blobs of solder and gobs of glue.
I'll post comments after I return from my two roadtrip.

There are several companies selling this same exact mic. AKD has one even! If they look the same, chances are they ARE the same...
e.g.

same mic, but he did some modifications to it, even managed to enhance the high-end detail a bit!
If you are thinking about getting one of these mics you should check out this site. You can buy the mics with different transformers.
There are some soundclips as well.
Plus: I think Ju is a great guy.
I wanted to buy the Shiny Box 23 ribbon mic, but he recommended me buying the T-bone from Thomann in Germany instead (since I'm in Europe). The T-bone RB500 is basically the same mic as his (unmodded) 23, so it would be a lot cheaper for me to buy locally. Very cool. 8-)
The models with the Cinemag and Lundahl tranny's sound impressive. The Cinemag seems to have a slightly higher output but the Lundahl is very smooth (of course).
