Hello there for the first time peoples. i've been looking over your shoulder for the past week or so...so here is my first post. i am just getting into the mastering headspace on some projects and some real recording with real mics (U87 & RODE NTK) which is awesome, but i sure would like to know if any of you would recommend any of the books that are available out there. ears work great, but it never hurts to catch up on ones reading or see what the greats do for mic placement and such...thanks for the help...

The be all end of reference books is "Handbook for Sound Engineers, The New Audio Cyclopedia" published by SAMS. It has almost everything you need to know and can be known. It's not a practical guide and it's about $80 but if I need to know ANYTHING I go there first.

Modern Recording Techniques by David Miles Huber and Robert E. Runstein (now in it's fifth edition) is a great book for fundamental knowledge. I know it's available through amazon.com or mix books… for under $40.
