It's not Apple's responsibilty to "support" Digidesign in any way. Apple's job is to make a reliable computer. Digidesign is responsible for making products that work on that computer, if they so choose.

Even if it is a load of BS, it is possible that the two companies are having bad relations and will evenyually force clientele to choose which product they will remain faithful to. Since I recently bought a new Imac, I must choose Apple. Any comments?

Hmm. The rumour sounds like a lot of misunderstandings or even conscious badmouthing, you never know. I would guess that both companies are rewarded by the association: Apple from reaching a group of customers and DigiDesign from beeing able to run on the platform. The PT HD systems seems to run more on Apple than PC-s, for the PT LE I would think the proportion is more PC.

What is confirmed to be happening though is that Apple is changing to a new hardware platform, built around Intel processors instead of the current crop from IBM. This will probably have a lot of effects, but what they will be will be found out in due time. Ready when ready.

But it is in Apples best interest to make a computer that plays nice with everthing out there. At the end of the day they are a hardware company. BUTT! If digi desides it does not want to play nice with Apple it is ultimately their decision.

If that were true, then Apple hasn't been doing what's "in Apples best interest" since the company was invented. Apples only "play nice" with what is out there designed to work on an Apple machine.

The pro audio market is a tiny niche market, even for Apple. The major market for Apple is the publishing industry, one major newspaper easily has more macs in the building than all the studios in the US, I work at a small weekly paper, and we have more G5's than employees.

That said, there's nothing they (Apple) would do directly to adversely affect the pro audio market. The only thing this rumor could stem from is the new Powermacs and their lack of regular PCI slots. This is typical of Apple's early adoption of faster technology, and it is now in the 3rd party company's hands to play catch up. To assume that no warning was given to developers is a load of BS.

Again, it is not Apple's responsibility to hold a developers hand and work around their specifications. Windows is designed around a basic architecture scheme, as is OS X. The core hardware dictates the software specifications, not vice versa. UA designs plugins for the UAD-1, not the UAD-1 for the plugins. Get it?

If there is any conflict between Digidesign and Apple computers, it is the fault of Digidesign.

it wasn't that long ago that AVID had a plan and there was much movement to NT

then came FCP on the QuickTime engine
(yes - there is much more to it than that and some say that Apple started it with the loss of enough PCI slots for the 6 slot solution)

long ago there was a computer processor chip
it has Intel and AMD stamped on it (yes I have one and it still is in use)
now the two companies compete
soon Intel will make a brain for Apple

The computer business, both Software and Hardware has always been more complicated than it appears on the surface.
That's what makes it so much fun.

This happens every so many months on every board: here, gearslutz, DUC, etc.

If the original post has anything to do with PCI-e slots instead of PCI/PCI-X, its unfounded. Digidesign will be shipping PCI-e revisions of its HD DSP cards almost concurrently with the shipment of these PCI-e equipped G5s.

Apple and AVID may have an "us v. them" relationship, and AVID does own Digidesign. I don't get the impression from Digidesign that they are caught up in the "us v. them" saga.

For what I can tell windows has more problems and bugs with ProTools than Mac. PC users are often complaining because they think Digi cares more about Apple then PCs. Obviously this is not true, but ProTools and Apple are for sure a winning combination.
Now why would they break out???
