I currently record on a Boss BR-864 and I don't like the limited amount of inputs. I want to move onto computer based recording and I have an idea on what I need to buy. I have a PC and I want to use that. I am thinking about buying an M-Audio firewire interface with the RCA and S/PDIF inputs and a mixer. I want a mixer with enough mic inputs to record drums that is under $300 dollars. I have looked into Behringer mixers but have heard dome bad things and some good things. Does anyone have any tips or ideas for me?

Save some money-------------look around (E-Bay)---and get a mackie.
Dont waist youre money on something you "think" will work,be patient.
I strongly suggest a Mackie

Shoot for a good VLZ - the touted "improvement" with the VLZ-Pro is marketing spew. I had both, and sold the newer, PRO unit after doing an A/B test.
A VLZ mixer will have RED knobs on the Aux1 and Aux 2 faders.

NoiseAffair,

Thank you and Happy 2005, RO. Thanks Kurt for that post I'm ready to record some drum and bass gtr stuff soon.
Your post made me want to wait to hear the TMP8 over the OctoPre. I guess, in your opionion, it is definitely worth the extra $1,000 USD?
Plan I had was to use around four or five mics for drums (using the OH mics to pickup toms rather than individual close mics).
Advice / comments appreciated. Cheers, Mike

You get what you pay for. If you only have $300 you can't be picky and you can't expect to get a decent quality unit either. Your likely to get much better value for your money getting something used. The Behringer stuff is at the same level of quality of your BR-864.
