I want to put together some easy demos using straight line in recording of guitar and using different effects/patches to get the sound of the guitar, kind of like a Garageband setup even. I don't have a Mac and have a Firepod from my old band which I intend on using as my AI.

Recommendations?

What about the Cubase LE that came with the FirePod? That's perfectly capable software.

Edit: also check out these free vst amp sims.

Tubebaby is the best tube amp emulator you can get for free. There's also

I'll keep that in mind about the sims, thanks I need something sweet for that! I don't know if our Firepod came with Cubase, we got it years ago and it's not even mine, I'm just using it these days. If I can wrangle up Cubase from somewhere, isn't it a bit complicated for basic demo making or is it pretty good for that? I don't want something with a crazy learning curve keep it mind, I do want good sounding demos, tho.

Don't "wrangle"(ie: torrent download) Cubase. Get the install cd from whom ever you borrowed the FirePod from. The install CD should have Cubase on it. Otherwise, look into Kristal Audio Engine(free) or Ntrack(about $60), Reaper or one of the many other inexpensive or free options. You will have to pay for VST and VSTi(midi) functionality.

Cubase is no more complicated than any other DAW. The concepts are the same. If you learn signal flow for one DAW, you'll be able to figure it out for another.
