My opinion, NO. The mic will hold its value indefinitely while the Mix Farm card will be worthless in a short time. In my view, it's a no brainier! Fats

I agree with Fats. Sell it for a mic or mics you will use more often. What kind of stuff do you record? what other mics do you have?

Maybe improving your micing will reduce the need for EQ and free up the DSP.

For what its worth my KSM44, KSM32, TC30K and TLM103 usually see more action than my U87 too.

go to e-bay and you will find reasonable prices for themix cards. Remember, Mix systems are uite old, and HD systems have just completed their first birthday. Hd chips are not powerful enough to handle 192k with stuff like Waves linear Phase, so I imagine at early 2004 somthing knew shall arouse.

About miccs, you will be comfortable with a nice AT4050, much cheaperr than a U87 and slightly better than an AKG414. This is my opinion, of course

I'd have to agree with Steve - trade the U87 for a good mic that'll be used a lot. I wouldn't hold my breath for a Farm - they're just dropping in price.

Maybe in the days of tape the 87 was able to shine and that's why it's become so many folks' "go to" mic - but it's not the first one I pull down when I'm at a studio that's got 'em.

You could trade it in for something newer, like something made by Soundelux that're getting great reviews. Royer's are great as well - an R121 would round out a mic cabinet nicely, IMHO.

If you can't swing a Mix Farm, try for a DSPFarm - about 1/4 the power of a Mix Farm, but hey, it'll buy you some room in your mix.

Definitely learn to use your DSP most efficiently, though. Print effects when needed. I used to run a d24 based system and when running things like reverb, I'd always have to either use AudioSuite or print the FX to a track.

No! in 20 years your U87 will still be a great mic- (unless we are recording ear-to-brainwaves-to-disk by then) in 2 years you won't be able to give your Farm card away.

Besides, nothing impresses the clients like a Neumann.

Think of a mic the way you would a fine musical instrument. You wouldn't trade your vintage acoustic guitar for Farm card would you?

Good mic, keep it, find it's strong points, (they are way to sibilant for me personally, hence the SP mod/remanufacture) and hold out.
