I'm trying to record some bass tracks using Cubase 5 and a fast track usb plugin . Windows 7 64-bit. I can get Cubase to register the sound levels of the bass, however when I actually record, the sound doesn't show up in the top part. Basically, the recording remains a straight line instead of showing the sound being recorded like I've seen in youtube videos. At the bottom though, the sound meters move up and down along with my playing, just nothing at the top. Because it's not showing up, i've been unable to hear back anything i've recorded, but when I close Cubase it will ask me if I want to save the recorded files that I just recorded. Please let me know what I can do to get Cubase to register the sound. Record and monitor are both enabled. Thanks.

Also look at your Mixer window and make sure the fader controls are turn up! (input and output)
Hope that helps!
Thanks for the response. Yeah I checked all the vst connections and changed it to the m-audio driver. I also tried recording with just the internal mic on my comp. It registers the sound, like it shows that its recording but it doesn't play any audio when i play back. I can hear the audio being picked up through my headphones as it happens, but the playback never plays anything, even though now the recording function shows that it is actually recording the audio on that line thing. Any other helpful suggestions?

Don't know what to tell ya....I'm pretty sure you've missed a setting or don't have everything installed right.
Do you have a separate drive for recording the project audio tracks onto or are you using the main drive?
Do you have the latest ASIO drivers installed for your M-Audio?
Did you create a new project folder in Cubase and assign a folder/drive location to save the audio files to?
Did you create a new audio track and properly assign the input and output in the Inspector?
Did you turn off the record and monitor buttons after recording for playback?
Did you setup the M-Audio as your default recording and playback device in Win7 Sound properties?
Did you read the manual for the M-Audio and Cubase?

Wow I wasn't turning off the record and monitor buttons when I hit playback. I feel really dumb but at least I figured out the problem. EDIT: YOU FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM. Really appreciate the help man, can't tell you how much i've been getting upset over this. A couple more things if anyone has the knowledge, when I play it back through headphones, the sound only comes out of the right ear even though I'm recording in stereo. Also, the sound level is pretty low, but would that be fixed by turning the mic input up even though I'm using a guitar cable? Thanks
No problem your welcome, glad I could help....don't feel too bad
No problem your welcome, glad I could help....don't feel too bad I think everybody I've shown how to use Cubase does that!
In your VST connections and your track input/output setup like jimmys69 said mics and guitars are "mono" so either setup a mono channel or just insert a stereo effect on your mono guitar track. Click on the "e" button on the Inspector and in the plugin slot to the left of that screen select an effect and your track will be stereo in your headphones.
Many people struggle with this as well....

Seriously dood? Yeah, the videos are very informative. I like them myself. But really? All you do is post these on every forum over, and over. I sure hope you are getting paid well for your redundancy.
