Does anybody know how to construct a corner bass trap? Any design ideas would be great thanks...

Divo, Constructing bass traps is Ethan’s domain. Corner traps
Divo,
Constructing bass traps is Ethan’s domain. Corner traps are something he is selling and he is not releasing the instructions on how to build them. They require some metal fab anyway and are probably beyond most of us to construct anyhow. I myself have doubts whether wood and fiberglass bass traps are really any more efficient that simple foam rubber ones are. All coefficient data I can get my hands on says no. But Ethan says that the foam manufactures method of measuring their coefficients is flawed. But you have to keep in mind that Ethan is a manufacturer of bass traps also, so of course he will say his product is better. Anyone would. He and I have had this disscussion a few times and we have agreed to disagree. I encourage you to ask Ethan about this also and make up your own mind. Let me know if you want to see the coefficent data I have compliled. I would be glad to PM it to you. To be fair, I believe Ethan is telling us what he really thinks and is not trying to be deceitful or dishonest just to help his sales but as I said, I still have my doubts. Kurt

Hi Divo,
I am not an expert at this, but I hope my post helps you a little. I too have doubts about comments and suggestions sometimes on msg boards, but sometimes people really want to help.
I guess a basic understanding of acoustics (which I'm trying to gain by reading books, but then again, how "far" do they go in the books? :)
Another good place to visit is John Sayer's Studio Design site....smaller number of members, but that's what I like about it....all the topics get covered pretty well.

Unfortunatelly , this site is down at the moment , but John hopes it should be up very soon
good luck mate

You can get excellent performance just sticking rigid fiberglass across a corner, as shown in my Acoustics FAQ. It's not as good as a MiniTrap, but it's the best corner trap you'll get for $20!

All you have to do is look at the test data on my MiniTraps page. That page and data were not available when we last had this discussion. MiniTraps are three times more effective than LENRD corner foam at 100 Hz. This is scientific fact as certified by IBM for our traps, and using Auralex's own data for the LENRD. Since the LENRD data unfairly includes the edges, in practice the difference between a LENRD and a MiniTrap is even greater.
The edge effect when measuring is explained very clearly in the sidebar "The numbers game" in my Acoustics FAQ. Kurt, if you can find any faults in that sidebar, please let me know!
Divo, if you want to discuss corner traps further, it makes more sense for you to start a new thread in my forum.

Ethan,
As you so graciously pointed out these figures were not available when we had our last discussion. I stand corrected and I retract that statement. Thank you for bring that to my attention... Kurt
Are you trying to sneak this one past the Acoustics moderator?
Are you trying to sneak this one past the Acoustics moderator? :D
What size? Are you looking to do a MODEX type thing or just a Ethan Winer type MiniTrap across the corner?
Oh, the MODEX can be seen at the RPG site. (..I think)
Now that I'm 30, I can't recall too much .....
