So I apparently won the pre-amp lottery. I scored an Altec Lansing 1567A, 4 into 1 preamp, long ago in a garage sale for $5. As it turns out, unbeknownst to me, some are saying it's a great sounding pre. It's all hand wired, decades old, and sports a bunch of 12AX7's in the back of it.

Anyway, I've been talking to an electronics guy here in town who is willing to have a stab at turning it from a 4 into 1 into a 4 into 4 with XLR's in and 1/4" jacks out.

I'm willing to lose the VU meter, the master volume, and the bass/treble, to have tube 4 pre's, and I'll take care of all the sonic adjustments in my board.

So do those of you in the know see any major issues with this, or any "make sure you have him do this..." type advice?

Should there be an upgraded power supply, or any of the doodads and whatsits upgraded, changed, or otherwise monkeyed with?

What about phantom power? Can one buy separate phantom power units, would one have him install it in this unit?

Also I tried to contact the guy at Vintage Loop about doing the work, and the e-mail got bounced. Anybody got an e-mail for him that works?

Remember, I'm a newbie, so be gentle...

Cheers
Keith

What you have described is possible
but
finding the right tech to do the job will be the important factor.

Do some research and then explain yourself and you wants ... very well. Don't blame the tech for not being a mind reader.

all things are possible

one thing I do see, is that you only have one line driver.
....
so you will need 3 more including the output trafo
... or rig the existing parts in some way.
I would need to know more about the unit.

Thanks Kev,

If you have time, here's more info. I know you probably have better things to do, so no rush. Also I could contact you through your web site if th'at easier. (you're on the DIY page aren't you?)

Anyway:

An original brochure for the 1567A is here

The schematics are here:

The specs are here

A picture and sort of a 'review' are here

Much appreciated.

You don't need to lose the master volume, the summing bus nor the meter to perform direct out functions... if you need the number of a competent tech zip me an email [ Fletcher@mercenary.com ] and I'll recommend a couple.

Building direct outs into a 1567 really ain't rocket surgery... and while you have someone in there, it might make sense to like recap/refurbish the unit... maybe even a set of new tubes for shits and giggles.

Best of luck with it

Hi,
I am in the same process and would love to hear from your work as you go along.
Thanks

I have no tech around me and will do it myself so I'll have my hear open to suggestion.
Thanks
Alex

PS: why do you want to get red of the VU meter why not keeping it with a 4 position swith to monitor 4 of the individuals input.

what I want is to transform this device into a 4 inputs 2 independent outputs, I will be easier than your plans since the device has already 2 outputs
