nothing like the real deal, especially when you have a good drum room but if you don’t, you’ll always get a better mix using the alternative. 
 

I’ve been been programming drums for about 4 decades now. I use the MPC X today. 
 

I’d love to hear more about how you used the Roland TD-9 with your DAW.  It synced really well.
 

What DAW are you using? How did you sync it to your tracks?

I'm still on Sonar, bud. 

My cousin was a nationally known producer (Think "Stacy's Mom has got it going on"), and he said something that always stuck w/ me: The importance of the sonic chain starts at the performer, recorded on the right mic, into the right preamp, into the right recording device then into the right mixing paradigm - in order of lesser of import the further down the chain.  

Wise words. 
 

Sonar has always been really good with midi and syncing up to external devices. I switched to Samplitude years ago. It’s an excellent DAW but has always been a bit lacking trying to get it to sync well to external devices.

So are you going to keep using the Sampler for your drum kit? It will be interesting hearing how you move forward now that you’ve got a taste for less phase. 😉

Your bass sounds good. What did you use there? 

We are going to likely modify things slightly. We adore the ability to swap sounds on the kit itself, but the drummer finds the e-hi hat lacking in flexibility, so we'll likely replace that w/ a real hat.

The bass is a hand made ax crafted by the bass player. He found an off brand that he really liked how it played at a flea market. He ripped out all the cheap electronics and put his own stuff in. I don't know what he used, but he's pretty handy that way. What you're hearing is the sound of that recorded direct.

JJ (our guitarist) engineered the recording phase, prepped the raw tracks, and then sent everything to me to mix. We recorded at his house. He owns the TD - 9 set, and it was our drummer's first experience on e-drums. Fortunately, he adored the change, and what could be done w/ it.

The kit, itself, is Addictive Drums 2 - their rock kit.

I actually like the "tightness" of the hats. The trade off in not having the most dynamic feel from a drum machine (sampler) is a much better trade-off to phase (imho).

I'm a bit confused over how you use the TD 9. Do you trigger the TD-9 with the V kit?

We used the sounds that are native to the Roland for reference live, but record the midi for later mixing. Drummer plays to a click track.
