If you are running it on a PC, look for the DMA settings and try to turn them off. I run a Mac, but recall doing this on a clients PC and it got rid of a similar problem.

Also, I assume you are running 2 different hard drives. You can't have the audio accessed from your system drive.

I have a gateway 550GR. It comes with a P4 3.2GHz processor w/ hyper-threading. 512MB DDR Ram. I looked at Digidesigns answerbase and it said something about disabling the hyper-threading. I looked in the manual and couldn't find it. If anybody knows how please tell me. Or if you know how to resolve this issue I would appreciate the help. I haven't tried the above post yet. I'm going to try after I finish typing this. Thanks again

mbox incompatible with intel 915 and 925 chipsets

my guess is that your computer uses an intel 915 or 925 chipset. the mbox is incompatible with these 2 chipsets which most newer computers use. i encountered this exact problem in the last few days with my new dell 8400. right now i'm debating whether to return my computer or wait it out til they come up with a fix. id hate to waste $50 to ship it back to dell, but who knows how long itll be before they come up with a fix.

i tried the "unsupported workaround" of using a powered hub but it didn't work for me.

Could any kind of PCI USB card help "II" here? I have read of simular issues with certain FireWire devices and certain FW chipsets, and a PCI FireWire card seems to help them "workaround" (as long as the chip on the PCI card is compatible with the external device)...

PS - The 915 chipset kicks ass! :D I wouldn't return your fast new PC just because of this 3rd party incompatibility (unless you are set on the Mbox and PT "Lite"). I don't know if this is something a firmware upgrade could fix, so there may not be a "fix" from Digi ? Not sure - just speculating.

I don't think this could be DMA related, as that is referring to the speeds of the P-ATA/SATA buses, and turning it "off" will only hinder bandwidth to the HD...

Hyper-Threading could be a possible culprit (I don't believe PT LE is HT friendly), and this requires disabling HT in your BIOS, and doing a fresh OS install :(

I read the last thread on this problem, but what I'm wondering is how to see if i have the intel chipset that doesnt work with the mbox. I need to figure it out soon so i can return the mbox before its too late. I have a dell dimension 8400, 3ghz, 1g ram, 2 hard drives, i just dont know how to see what chipset i have. Also, if the hyperthreading is the culprit, how do I reinstall windows after i disable. I have never reinstalled windows before, will I lose a bunch of stuff by doing that or is the process designed not to wipe your computer clean. Thanks for any help!

I'm having the same error, and believe it's probably the hyperthreading. This was taken from the protools site:

"Pentium 4 systems with HyperThreading technology must have "Intel HyperThreading" in the system BIOS disabled."

another guy posted a useful link about chipsets that has links to other useful support pages on protools.

Unless there's some wierd workaround I haven't heard of, the protools site actually says to ENABLE DMA for hard drives on your computer.

I don't know about hyperthreading and whether you actually have to reinstall your OS, so I'm making a back up now and then trying it. I'll post again if it fixes my problem and/or if I had to reinstall my OS.

not hyperthreading, but solved it, and have info on hyper...

First, to fix the problem I actually jsut did ctrl alt delete, viewed the processes, found the protools process, right clicked on it, and set the priority to high. no more problem

As far as turning off hyperthreading...

You don't have to reinstall your OS after disabeling hyperthreading in your OS in most cases. Go to control panels, double click system, click the hardware tab, click the device manager button, go to the computer node in the tree. Expand it and you'll see whether your machine is still seeing your processor as a multiprocessor....oh yeah, be sure to disable hyperthreading in the bios before all of this. You can then select "update driver", but choose yourself....from the choices choose something that DOESN"T say multiprocessor. This is all it takes.
