I'm not sure where I saw it (MIX? PAR?) recently, but they liked it a lot. VERY pricey, as I understand, but they did have good things to say about it.

Perhaps the only downside was the placement of certain controls (on the rear) that will get tough to reach if you rack mount it.

But otherwise.......

the bigest down fall i see is the price. its a little lack lust and unknown for the price. i mean its just bad marketing. say you walkinto GC you see the robbie for a grand, then you look to its left and you see the brick for less then half. it looks like your buying a $600 case. then if your a consientios shopper you go online looking for reviews and you find hundred glowing reviews on the brick and 3 for poor ol robbie.

I don't care if it sounds like liquid gold - it won't fit into my rack so I'm not gonna buy it. There are too many other pres that sound way too good and DO fit in my rack to even waste my time with this goofy looking dork of a pre.

Yeah, I know, you can mount it to a rack tray, blah blah blah. It still takes up WWWWAAAAYYYY too much space for a single channel pre.

Sure, the Brick is an odd shape too, but put a few of those side by side and voila, you have a neatly shaped rack-mounted set of pres at a decent price...

I can only think they were targetting the desktop studio musician and not full studios in which case, they missed their target by pricing out of the realm of reality.

Don't get me wrong, there are some great pres for $1000 per channel, but they're *Normal*.

Okay, I'll shut up now.

I am glad you like it and it is reviewed well, it just really strikes me as odd...

I like them as I always liked the movie 'Forbidden Planet.' they are like a novelty- - however, I don't like them enough to pay 1k for them... would raher get 2 bricks-

If you base your decisions on what a preamp looks like and think that because two look similar then they should cost the same then...well, you just shouldn't do that.

As for the reviews, the Brick has been around for longer and is significantly cheaper, so I'd expect to see many reviews on it. Most that I've read have been positive as well, although a few have said it's too dark/muddy for their tastes. To each his or her own.

I do agree that the preamp's biggest problem is its form factor. It's not convenient to mount in a rack and isn't really a floor box (like the Brick) either...and it's huge. I had no idea how big it was until I saw one in person. I've heard it sounds great and would like to hear one sometime but it would have to amaze me for me to work out the logistics of putting one in my studio.

yeah i went to guitar center and saw the brick in person. Its much bigger than a brick. It's sized more like a cobblestone..they should have called it that.

one went on ebay for about $600 the other day... if they are that good, maybe I shoulda bid on it...

im not basing it on looks but more like features, they are bolth verry simple designs; a tube pre/di. mypoint is they are really compeating with each other because they do the same thing and nothing else and they sit next to each other in major chain outlets, they are both obtrusive, only one for sake of functionalyity and cost, and the other for novelty reasones. the one that looks like a work hourse is less then half the cost of the robbie. that is bad marketing.

well, maybe they sound different- i wonder though if one robbie is worth 2+ bricks, since like frob pointed out, is basically the same design aimed at roughly the same market. maybe someone will post soon who has listened to both

Comparing on features doesn't tell you anything as well. Everyone from Behringer to both of these companies to Manley to Fearn makes basic tube pre/DI's and what should really matter is the quality. I don't know how much where they'd sit in chain stores factored into their design.

i KNOW the brick kicks ass. i know that because its priced competitively, so some people bought it to give it a try, they then said that it sounds great after that they could raise the price and people would still buy it because it kicks ass. blue made something and nobody really knows about it and its not really cheap enuph for some one to just pick up. it could be really good it could suck. but i cant affourd to put down 1k on somehting that noone has ever heard. at the verry least the sould have hierd a couple of trolls to build some hype about the product.
