Hello,

bought a bunch of stuff last week from a studio that's closing down. It included a Bellari RP583, a dbx 160S and 2 dbx 165.

We need to sell some of the stuff to finance the deal. Any ideas on which compressors to keep?

I love all three of them, but my favourite so far is the dbx 165.

Let me hear your opinions!

Anything from Bellari that I have heard is utter crap, so it's no surprise which one I'd dump. The dbx 165 is a very good mono comp and the 160S is a great flexable stereo comp. The 160S can do about 90% of what the 165 can do. I'd be looking for other things to sell before those two. You would be smart to keep both and add to them as having multiple channels of good to great compression is always needed at some point in time and a good thing to have available to you. If it came down to it, without a doubt the 160S is the better and more flexable unit. But then what do I know, I'm just a guy who owns two of them...

I've been thinking of buying some older DBX compressors myself. I'm definetely gonna get at least one of the 160 VU type compressors, but can you guys give me the lowdown on some of the other 160 models that you have used. Any info on features, opinions on quality, applications they are best suited for ect... would be great.

WEll, The dbx 166XL is not really even close to the sound and performance off what dbx is famed for, but it can be used with better results than the orginal 166.

Your physicaly interface limited on what you can use any outboard gear with the 002R. You have to use it before you go in or on an output and than back to an unused input.
