I like it...sounds great, easy to use, clean uncolored pres, reliable...pretty good internal clocking or clock from SPDIF, priced very well...

I would like more software routing features, but hey, $600 gets you good preamps, 8 analog outs (hello stem mixing!), FW interfacing, and the ability to stack units for 16 analog ins, 16 outs, plus masters...

For a project/small shop, I give it an A...for a higher end place, I'd still give it a B+ (only real issue I have is the unusual blend knob between playback and realtime monitoring for cue sends...makes if difficult to set up various levels for multiple cue sends...)

I'm looking at the Firepod for my setup as well. My other top choice is the Motu Traveler, which I think is very cool. The firepod does have 8 preamps though, which is really nice, the Motu only has 4. I do like the display and meters on the Motu though. Anyone care to give some input?

yes: the MOTU traveller is capable of running of notebook's power...I've no idea how long for or the power draw exactly, but if you are after the truly portable solution where no power supplies are available, then the traveller or the M Audio FW1814 would be considerable options...

If you are going to be around power plugs all the time, I would go for the Firepod, as it it gives you more preamps...for less money and I've not read a single bad thing about the unit in all my research and travels,,

BUT, to throw another spanner into the works... Also consider that the other two units have ADAT I/O where the Firepod has 'mere' SPDIF..

BUT also consider that the Firepod has relatively mature (ish) drivers that are reperted to work very stable. The Traveller is new and the drivers are immature...but they could be great, I just don't know!

I was looking at the RME fireface, but due to current driver issues, I am leaving it till they've 'aged' a bit into maturity. The Firepod will definately more than get me by in the mean time :)

I loved the Firepod and Firebox. Really decent sound from the pres and the A/D. Very clear and articulate compare to the competetion.

Unfortunately I had problems with pops and clicks on my laptop with both units. IT worked great on my desktop, but no matter what I did to my laptop the pops kept happening. I worked as a tester for both a sound card company and for Syntrillium(Cool Edit), so I've got a strong background in PC audio devices and I could not stop this problem.

Tried a friends 828mkii and it was flawless. Bought a traveler and it has been perfect. I liked the sound of the Firepod better, and the price was certainly better, but I need a no-pop solution.

All of that said, most people have not had any problems with it. For reference, my laptop is a Dell 700m.
