Well. .

For me the answer is no.

1. I own a mix + rig with all the plugs, external clock, some neve's & calrec pre's/eq's, 1176LN, otherr sundry stuff.
2. My technique definetly is what people pay for and since PT rigs are so ubiquitou in LA, I don't raelly charge for it. I include it in my rate.
3. If someone has to have it...they can pay for it.
4. For song writing, demos and post a mix+ and 44.1 the way I use it is more than good enough...for an album, it's either the same, or 2", or...whatever, they pay for it.

5. It'll cost $10K-$15Kjust to get where I am now.
6. My family deserse that extra change to be spent on them...
7. It's aLways going to be there.
8. Next year...or even the year after, they're be usde ones to buy.

At least that's where I've been leaning...and thanks to digi's shortsighted exchange deadline...that's where I'll stay.

How about you...

P.S. Besides, digi the new HD (let alone the old Mix) doesn't have a RecorderMan plug... :D

I'm swinging like a gate in the wind!

Where is OSX
Where is MidiO
I have two SC and now there are nothing!
I hate the new interfaces! All I wanted was 16 in 16 out in one box. Only the 192 has soft clip. Pre is not an interface.
Yep ... plugins.

Compatibility with my LE is very important to me. We should see LE 2 very soon and I hope it brings what I need.

DB25's ... did I mention I hate the idea of the DB25's.

I will upgrade but when? ... I just don't know what to do and that deadline is just about here.

Prediction time,

Deadline extended and LE to have 32 tracks and NO OSX ....

but what would I know?> ..

anonymous Wed, 05/22/2002 - 14:44

I would say LE would go up to 32-48 tracks now HD is 128. They have to get more into the market especially now with the Mbox thingy.

PT HD will not bring you any work short term, most will update at some time, although as you know Kev there is a lot of PT3 and D24 studios around Melb as it is. They just advertise Pro Tools, the punter does not know. As RecorderMan said they pay you for your chops not the new fancy box.

I am dead quiet at the moment, I keep swaying both sides of the fence. Last week working out the finite finances, Today I am on the if it does not pay for itself, then you do not need it side. Thinking last night if the digi002 comes out with 48 tracks, would I down grade and save money.

Guest Wed, 05/22/2002 - 14:53

I dont feel I deserve it.

I feel it funny to be running on an old beige G3.. it's like Mad Max!

Next I will be getting an assistant pedaling a bicycle attached to a generator!

NO HD FOR ME TILL THE NEXT HIT!

but...... I have some firewire clients knocking on the door at the moment.. see if that wipes the smile off my 'survivalist' face..

I dont want to buy a new Mac

:w:

Kev Wed, 05/22/2002 - 22:42

Dave,

I though you had aready gone HD?

I have 001's and trust me even with a Kick G4 it is just not the same :( , It is a pleasure to get back home to the TDM system even on the old 9600.

But Dave I do hear what your saying. It might al come down to .... do you want the others to have something you don't?

Jule's,

don't be down about the G3 - a friend of mine runs the G3 ... I have a 9600 /G3 sonnet and still run OS 8.6.

I think you have the extension chassis??? You could get a Firewire card. Transfer the session across to your SCSI and work on then copy back at the end of the day.

Firewire shouldn't put you out of the loop.

Or .... are we talking Firewire interfaces...

This could be a bad thing!

Hi Kev,

I ordered one when they came out, no plugs so I said do not worry about it and brought a Fatso, ISA430 and Drawmer 1969 instead. The HD3 and 192k system came in a month ago or so and they asked if I still wanted it, I said maybe if someone else wants it they can have it. It goes up around AUD$4-5000 after June 30 that is why I am swaying back and forwards. Probably be gone if I say yes.

Since getting the 1969 and Fatso I use a lot less comps in the session so a LE with a RTAS oxford could get me by. Mind you I never have any room for my DUY stuff as my Mix3 runs out so maybe not.

I keep thinking of getting out or scaling back, as I cannot get out of doing 60% plus first/second timers, so it is a catch22. I put the price up and get out of demos and bands drop off as no one has heard off me, Put the price back down and only get cheap shitty demos with bands who cannot bloody well even singer(the other weekend oh my god). US$60,000 latter and I charge $5 hour more then the VST/Tascam M3500 setup I started with.

Kev Thu, 05/23/2002 - 02:26

Jule's describe the Mac slots to me.

I was thinking you may have room in the Mac for the firewire card.

On board Video
Video Card
Chassis Card
Firewire Card

Oh dear .... where is the Ultra SCSI card??

If you can find room in the Mac I'm sure you will be able to transfer the sessions from the clients FW drives to your SCSI's...

Dave,

I hear you ...

I don't have the answers.
I've done the shitty bands. BUT most of the musso's were friends or connections of friends.

When it's not fun .... just say NO.

stay cool

Jules, FWIW, I have a beige G3 too. However, it's not my PT machine, I use a G4 for that. But I did put a firewire card in the G3 - they're cheap and it works flawlessly. (I put in a USB card too which works equally well, but you probably don't need that).

I use the G3 primarily for internet, personal use, accounting, correspondence, printing, etc. That allows me to keep my G4 completely pristine with a minimal number of system extensions for recording use only.

Thanks guys I have a firewire card coming tomorow (I hope) I will ditch my SampleCel II TDM card (swapping for an Mbox!)

and have heard it will work well in my exp chassis (fingers crossed)

Hopefully on Monday the Brand New Heavies will come in and do some transfers... (PT to Logic) the guitarist is a regular client of mine..

Thanks for the reports & ecouragement!

Office work is done in my flat / apt.

Studio Mac is pure music..

Palm desk top diary runs on studios Ibook which doubles as a MBox PT station (& Logic)
also fitted is an Airport card for wireless internet access anywhere in my VAST complex (ok.... - it works in the toilet & the live area too!)

:)

I'm feeling as flakey as everyone else out there.
The bottom line is that people come to you for 'you'. With 3gh proccessors on the horizon, is it possible that a native system with the new 8000s could be viable. I'd hate to dump 15k for PTHD only to find it's not needed in 2 years.
One possible way is to keep Mix3 and add some farm cards or do the PTHD update with the digital interface only then upgrade the 8000s at the end of the year? Tape is starting to look pretty good to me again.
Maybe 8 track cassettes?

anonymous Tue, 05/28/2002 - 18:42

Ok well, I have done it. Pick up HD system on Monday, was going to pick it up tonight, let this weekends tracking go without a prob first(just incase). I have to to get the cables setup done. Went for the HD3 with the 192 plus extra 8A/D in, and will keep the 882/20. Was going to have to update the A/D I have from the 882 and 1622, an ADAT bridge plus a AD16 was going to cost around $9-10,000 or 2 88/24 would be around $8000 and I do not like them.
Will bite the bullet and keep in the game for another 12 months and then see where I am at.
Will take me thatlong to pay it all off.

Can get an Oxford beta to see me through to until it is out in a few weeks. The Sony guys are pretty cool and its a free upgrade anyway. I have the McDsp downloads already.
Might only update WM soundblender to start with and autotune.

Now I have to work out if I consolidate some of my plugins.
Anyone want to buy my DUY or BF stuff off me??

I will post next week what I think off it all, now I have fallen off the fence I will see what it is like.

anonymous Wed, 05/29/2002 - 05:08

Hi Kev and Everyone,

How are you all?
I am broke, but will survive.
I fell off the fence as the upgrade going up was worrying me. If they do it or not is to be seen. Then there is the 2 free plugs, I will get Maxim and Softsamplecell.
Of the DUY plugs I am really only using Max at the moment post-fatso/1969, so maxim can replace that and I can sell off the DUY stuff.
The oxford beta being available was the final straw.

I went for the extra 8 A/D in the 192 as I was finding it hard to go back to 16 tracks, 18 would do me though. So 24 it had to be.
I have been taking the dual out of the Buzz from the Kick/snare and squishing it through the Fatso on the way down. So I end up with a squished and a raw track. I have not been compressing them once in PT lately, just blending the two, with EQ.

Will let you know Monday arvo how it all went.

anonymous Wed, 05/29/2002 - 17:21

Hey Kev,

What’s your PT setup at the moment?
For me it always came back to the 20bit A/D of the 882 and 1622. I have upgraded my front-end pres/comps etc.. Although kept leaving my A/D's.
The old saying it’s only as good as your weakest link, kept going through my mind.

Now to work out which plugs I upgade and which I sell off.

Kev Wed, 05/29/2002 - 22:11

Digi Stuff,
Mix/plus, 888/24, ADAT bridge, SCII(TDM-link).
Other bits,
9600/G3/350 ... Optcode XTC64 , 2 ADATS hanging off ther light pipes(and another in it's box) BRC and a DA30 hanging off the SPDF of the ADAT Bridge.

That's the TDM rig..

There are a couple of 001's - in different machines ..... and an MBox on the way. These are loaners, to get projects started.

Too much invested in the ADAT's. I had bad timming when I jumped at all this. I was still thinking that Mix/plus was .. like a side car to the 24 Trk ADAT... I was still thinking PT3??

oh well??? :o

anonymous Thu, 05/30/2002 - 01:13

Hey Kev,

I do not know, is the Mac compatiable, if not then thats the first problem as that will add upgrade $$$'s. I am renting my mac as you have to upgrade the sucker every couple of years.
As I have said before I did not go 888/24 to start with as I do not like the sound. You add a Apogee to it and it cost big $$$. ADAT bridge was not 24bit, so I got the 882/1622 combo.
Been thinking of updating these for the last year or so.

I hopefully have it up and running next Monday, give me a call if you like and come down and have a play maybe next Friday day or night 9381 2636.

It is not a simple setup like mine to update.
Do you
1)Get the 192k then run the adat bridge off it, and trade the 888.
US$2,195 upgrade
2) Keep the 888 trade the adat bridge on the 192 and get another 8 adat in for it.
US$3,695  upgrade including extra digital card.
3)Trade in the ADAT for 192k digi only and keep the 888, you would be down the 8 A/D thru the 192k, cheapest option.
US$1,695 :w:

What probs do you have with timing, I have been recording straight to PT for a while??

Catch ya Dave

Option 3 is basically it but it's not about price.

It will go something like this.

9600 will get a 001.

My FCP G4/400 will probably get Tools and the ADAT bridge will become a 192 , one of the CSII's will become a SCC.

The ADATs will go in there cardboard boxes.

The 888/24 will hang off the 192 and be used for synth and effects send/returns.

A new Mac for FCP. The two will get etherneted together and I will try to live with ATA100/133 drives. I already have been experimenting with a Sarotec FW drive for FCP. Good for storage but I think an internal ATA for music editing.

Mik W. offered couple of dollars for the ADATs. I don't know perhaps I'll give them to friends as I/O on the 001's????

As far as timing is concerned. I started recording straight to Tools from day one. Never had problems and this is why the ADATs have not rolled since. These ADATs are in pristene condition ( I mean Pristine! ). They were only I/O.. one for INs and one for OUTs .... then came the 888/24 and that was that, except for larger mixes where I used the desk and outboard.
