I am curious about how many of the Pro Tools users out there are seriously contemplating trading up or purchasing for the first time a new PT HD system? Comments?

I am busting to move BUT!

not until 001 compatability..
OSX and the new Midi port working direct ... that probably means PT6.
and SSC and plug stability sorted.. I will probably trade both my SC11's

All of that will probably take a few months yet.

Well I had a deposit on a system, although I am now using it for front end upgrades. Gota ISA430 and getting a Fatso and distressor to try out next week.

Plugins still a few months away. Some plugins like lexiverb might not even go HD. Do searches on DUC.

Wait until your plugins are there or your totaly stuffed. The 192k box is getting some good reviews even at 44.1 and 48k. I only have 1622 and 882 so that was why I wanted the upgrade straight away. No Sony EQ, no channelstrip, NO BF, no Autotune, how can it be used with out 3rd party plugins. Even Ampfarm which digi looks after is not out yet.

While not being 100% sure that upgrading will solve all or most of my PT's woes now or in the comming 6 to 12 months, I am making plans to upgrade as soon as my most used plug ins are on board. I've heard the system enough to be convinced that it is equal to or better than my Mix system with Apogees at 48k and much improved at the higher sampling rates. If you like the sound of the Apogees, you will like the sound of the 192's. My plans are to run HD at 96k and keep mixing with my Pro Control. If mix quality doesn't improve over the mix system, I will either seek out an external summing amp situation ala the future "Jules Method", or dump the 32 channel Pro Control and go back to an analog console (Media 51?).

The HD 24 track, 192K orchestral recording I heard with an internal rough mix (all faders at 0 with tracks panned) leaves me hopefull that Pro Tools mixing can make that next quality jump forward. Only one way to really find out and unfortunately it means dropping some money.

I keep telling myself that one day it will stop and I'll have all I need.

hi!

Stay away from the hd recording!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doesnt matter if there is 192khz sample rate!

Get a good 2" tape recorder and a good analog mixer with good digital automation and good outboard like LN1176 or LA2A and Api...

If you want to have a perfect timeing then you can you protools for editing, but stay please record original material on tape!

I have protools mix+ and 888 like 3 years now. Then sound is very bad and small. It is ok for demo. But if you want to win a grammy there is only analog and there will always be only analog.

There is now sample rate resolution that will sample with out resolution.

take care, M.U.

I'm planning to upgrade and I really hope that by June, the upgrade deadline- the plug-in situation is better. I'm looking forward to the move and the promise of all the benefits.I also feel that I'm making life a lot more complicated and expensive and wonder whether it truly makes sense, and when to stop!!.
Being an Apogee user makes it more tricky...

Yeah right.... when I win the lotto.

I can't even afford the 1176 or LA2 , that's why I have to make them... as for the 2" and an automated desk like a EuphonixCS2000 (analog but digital control and the company doesn't support it anymore) would cost way more than a Mixplus system.

I still have to use an Adat or two for I/O along side an 888/24. Yes I will gladly go HD when the time is right as it is still my cheapest solution.

When you win your next Grammy perhaps you can buy a new 2" and if I ask very nicely you might give me your old 2".

I'm not even tempted. I have a mix+ system now with two 888/24's and a Cranesong HEDD. I record everything at 44.1. Dropping $15-20k so that I can quadruple+ the size of all my sound files is way too frightening. I guess I'll make the move when my clients start leaving me for 192khz studios. So far, (as far as I know) no one has chosen my studio because of the sampling rate. They come here because the combination of studio ambience and my personality and technical skills help them to create a musical product that they feel is a fair and worthy representation of their artistic vision. Plus they like the snacks.

Here's hoping I can continue fooling them for at least a little while longer.

Beginning of the week I was convinced of going for an upgrade (2 x Mix + rigs, each needing 16 x analog i/o one, a maxed out card setup)

End of week, unconvinced,

right now.... on the fence..

I need to assess the acountancy / tax angle of a 2 x rig upgrade... $$$$

The mystery factor is what will be developed for PTHD?

What that will make it a future must have?

Auto Tune, Amp Farm& Beat dectective are what makes the PT 5 Mix + platform so cool right now....

Post 9/11, what can the R&D dept at any DAW manufacturer be relied on for? Why should they change anything? Have there been any promises made? All I have heard of is a plug in that can do "scratching" coming out soon, but that was from Serrato... So?? What do you expect from PTHD in the future? (beyond it's presently advertised capabilities?)

I have a ProControl too, so with no other all in one systems like it (Fairlight Dream just seems to be for post work) I am locked into PT for sure...

Thoughts?

Hey Jules
I too have seen your fence and have a well worn groove on my ass from trying to get off it. Because of the Pro Control, I seem to keep leaning on the upgrade side, but still have not committed. The mixing issues we all talk about are still a question but from what little listening I've done, the 192 sounds much better than my mix system with AD8000's, especially at 96k and 192k. This seems to be especially true with mic'ed sources which I have gathered seems to be something you do a lot off.

As I'm convinced that the current state of Apogees are not a real enhancement over the new Digi converters, I've decided to sell them off and use it to finance the upgrade. I know this suggestion sounds a little like leaning into a good head butt, but I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised at the improved quality of these new converters. Hopefully by the time Apogee gets a 96/192 AD8000SE out, all the Digi interface crap will be resolved and maybe Apogee will be forced to lower their prices to be competative. Bottom line is that I think we should be able to record some great music on a stock HD system. Hopefully we can say the same thing about mixing.

How's those summing mixer tests going (plan B)?

Have a good one.

hi Everyone,

I am on the fence also about this issue. But the real fact is that I am deep into the protool territory, like it or not, I have to change. It also matter of when PTHD is going to OSX.

To soften the blow, digidesing give us a trade in deal, like they are doing now, but with everyone on the fence like me, some will hang on to the old system, a few will upgrade. Once the trade-in deal is no more, that is when PTHD will be full speed with OSx and force everyone to invest big time. Am I being ass for saying this, let's hope that is not what is going to happen.

Most of the stuff I track is in the R&B / Hip Hop side of things... I really only need higher resolution on vocals (not off a 16 bit, 44.1K drum machine or keyboard)... I'll upgrade after it's ginea pigged by everyone else. If I was doing orchestral work, I'd have a different mindset.
My clients expect the conveniences of protools, so while some are wanting for their tape machines to lock up & rewind, I'm working on hit records.

In response to Miha Uratnik, I really don't buy that you can't win a Grammy without Tape. I read a column by somebody who was on the Grammy review committee to select "Best Produced Non-Classical" and he said that a Grammy winning song could be recorded in a 16 bit project. His main complaint was that recording medium didn't seem to matter because all the records they reviewed were compressed to hell and had no dynamics. But that's another discussion.

As for PTHD, I am with all of you. I will not upgrade until I see plug-in manufacturers all caught up and on-board. Most of my favoriteplug-insare not compatible yet. That makes the decision easy for now. I think the upgrade deals are pretty damn good, and I don't want to be kicking my own ass in another year when HD is the standard. I dunno. I am looking into it and already got a quote from my dealer. I have no complaints with my current Mix Cubed. I want to stay competetive and don't want to be left behind. Digi reps told me that the Mix platform will be supported for a while, with software updates having versions for both Mix and HD systems. I hope the dust settles before June 30th so we can make up our minds.

I had to chime in. Iordered an HD system the first day it came out but the system isn't fully ready enough for us. I am geting supurb results with my current system with ADAT Bridge,2 RME ADI pros clocked with Lucid. I'm not upgrading untill everything is in a tight bundle and I feel like tearing my studio apart. No plugins is one of the main reason no upgrade. The internal mix bus does not bother me or my clients. In fact Pro Tools is a heaven sent for us. I must say that I haven't tried an external mix bus yet. I would like to hear results and am always up for sound quality improvements. :w:

Right on the money Littledog!!!! Makes perfect sense to a poor ol producer like me. For the time being after a lot of agonising I reckon, like you my clients come to me because of the service we offer not the bit depth and size of the audio files....So for now its a big NO. In any case we should be able to pick up a few mix farm cards pretty cheap soon huh?

Hey Jules ...

Fairlight "Merlin" and Dream Station .. so I'm told .. are both set up to align to bars, beats, ticks etc. Very slick machines and just about bullet proof from everything I've heard. Merlin is supposedly designed with the pro recordiing studio as it's direct target.

You may want to talk to those FL chaps in your neck of the woods and get a few more details about those particular platforms. The "Sattelite" is geared more towards Post production, where their reputation is pretty much infallible.
