I have both mics, the ATM25 and the ATM250. The best way I can describe their difference:
The ATM25 has a "meatier" low end to it. Rounder tone on kick. It also sounds smoother on all sorts of horns (love it on 'bones and tenor sax).
The ATM250 sounded "harder", less depth. It does OK for other percussion, but so do 57's and audix i5's, and they're half the price.

Like I "bitched" at DD...demand is driving the price of the ATM25 UP...

Those all sound like cheap Japanese microphones to mean. I'd rather have any SM57 over that. I mean they're OK. Just OK. Nothing special. Nothing memorable. Nothing as universal as a 57.

There is nothing cheap or tawdry about the AT line of mics.

The ATM25 CAN and HAS been used as a hammer on many occasions and it eats the SM57's for lunch in a LOT of applications.

I have and love both.

I have a bag of 57's/58's...You put one of those on kick, then you try one of those "Jap" ATM25's on the same kick. ATM25 every time. And don't get me started on the merits of the AT4047...

BTW, I used to work for Ford. Those dumbass engineers used to compare the POS Escort to the Toyota Corolla, calling it that "Jap bunch of crushed beer cans"...look where that got them...:)

Shure makes nice mics, AT makes nice mics. I like nice mics. The ATM25 is one mic that get used every session, even my 57's don't get used every session.
