I'm a independent technician from Denmark... I'm seeking some information on the AMEK Angela console. I wanted to ask some of you who have experience with this disk what your opinion is on the sound quality (preamp/EQ) etc.
Is this considered a hi-end console or more like a cheap (and bad) version of the bigger AMEK consoles and has it anything to do with Rupert Neve as some owners claim?
What other brands would you compare the Angela preamp and EQ to?
I need a good front end for my Pro Tools rig and thought it might be cheap way to get a bunch of decent pre's and EQ's but I'm not sure if it's worth to spend time on.
Opinionswould be much appreciated.

I used one for 3-4 projects. It is a professional console. I wouldn't say it is special or highly desired and it certianly has none of the new or old Neve vibe that is popular today. I'd be more worried about repair and parts. But if your not worried about that, I sure would rather have it than a Mackie or Ghost or many of the Soundcraft consoles as long as it worked and could be kept working.

Sound was not the issue. It was kind of like a "poor man's SSL" in that it had a lot of recall features ("SuperTrue" automation) and onboard dynamics ("Virtual Dynamics", a PC-controlled VCA option). The issue for me and many other owners of the AMEK stuff then was...maintenance!
Ribbon cables, IC's, relays, switches, lamps, and jack panels were always giving us trouble. And that was when they were relatively new! Nowadays, I'm sure there's even more to go wrong.
As far as Rupert Neve was concerned, he was involved with the 9098 series. I don't believe that he had anything to do with the Angela (or the Hendrix, Rembrandt, Galileo,etc. for that matter).
IMHO, you'd be better off looking at some API or Portico modules, something like that. That way, you're getting what you REALLY seem to want (quality pre's/EQ), and nothing you don't (headaches!).
