I thought this might be an interesting idea.
What if we did a workshop on a current song that's on the hit list, "Special Effects, Making Songs - How did they do that?". We could do one style a month from Country to Hip Hop. It would be interesting to talk about how and what they did to get that sound, effect, arrangement etc. of each song.

Actually the producers of the song gave an interview to a musical magazine (can't remember which one ) in which they explained that they used the "digitech talker" pedal .I think you can play midi notes for the pitch.this effect can be obtained by using autotune with the fastest attack and mode "relaxed" (all notes trigger the effect).

Speaking of hip-hop, one effect that I really liked was something I heard on a Snoop Doggy Dog album. I don't listen to alot of hip hop so I'm not sure which album/song it was, but it was a really spooky de-tuned modulated type vocal effect. I'm sure this one isn't brain surgery and that those who work with hip hop would be all too familiar with this. Just something that caught my attention a while ago.
I can't say im a big fan of the 'Cher' effect either, and SO many people are using it? Maybe it's just me.

Cool to learn other ways of doing this. The Virus plugin rocks
Cool to learn other ways of doing this. The Virus plugin rocks IMO but using a foot pedal to sweep is a great feature I wish it had. It's been a year now so I can't quite remember what I did exactly but I believe in PT, you just import the Virus on a track, set the vocordor preset and start bending etc. I love the effect I got.

peace, the dog
The Cher thing was done by auto tuning.
The guy who actually did it said it in an interview/documentary on TV

Hello,
From a cubase.net thread of great length, it seems that, It was auto-tune, not a digitech "talker"( priced @ $150). The Producers Obv. wanted to have a joke on S-O-S readers. It would be like saying that Dave Navarro uses a Peavey combo to get his sound.

great trick i just used on a track [kind of wrong on this string, but neet]: i had a guitar super distorted doing "whole note" duration chords, two tracks. took one and put it through a danelectro tremelo on "hard" [turns signal on and off], gave myself 8th notes, mixed that back in.
saved my ass. god bless gtr pedals.

Hey, I don't own Vocal Align or a Virus, but I do have the Orange Vocoder and the GRM Tools plugin package with the great stereo comb filter (if you're very careful with it!). I haven't quite hit the classic "Cher" sound on my vocals but have created good vocoded voices using the combo none the less. Just my 2 cents.

:D Very funny but not true.... I was loading out of a Country gig in San Jose 15 years ago (I'm too old!) and I turned my back for just a minute. When I returned my wife's Peavey bass head had been stolen....lousy hillbillies, they'll steal anything........Fats

The "AM RADIO" preset on the Q10 plug in with a Faichild post EQ is a very good start. I believe Tony Maserati mixed that one, and is known to rock an SSL (in this case, probably using the HPF, and the LPF pre compression).

I thought this would get more attention lol, oh well, it interests me so I'll start on Chers' last big hit. "Do you believe" I forget the name but you will know the song I'm sure. Even though the song was boiled to death the production was IMO pretty excellent.
I have since used this effect and I would like to share the song if I ever figure out how to upload my tunes.
The effect they used (that caught my attention) I'm guessing was the Virus? Used with taste I think it really put a nice vibe to a phase. Great for dance and excitement.
