I have a couple items on mine

1. Dynaudio BM15's. Technically I just dropped the dough on these this weekend, but I'm doing it as a trial. I've heard so many good things about them, I felt the need to listen myself.

2. When you get that custom line mixer built - let me know. I have been looking for this EXACT item for quite some time now. I like to remote mount my pre's and send a line level signal back to the A/Ds, but I don't want to go through a traditional mixer for gain safety. I've seen the Speck LiLo, but I don't want to drop $10,000 for it!

3. Nice choice on the Camera. These are the most underestimated/underpurchased cameras on the market. They are, for all practical purposes Leica cameras through and through. Well worth the dough - the lens is magnificent and the shutter lag time is next to nothing (unlike most "point-and-shoots" in which category this loosely fits.)

4. Figure 8 caps for my AKG Blue Lines. ( I think these are the Pana/Leica's of the microphone world - great stuff, small price, highly underestimated.)

5. Benchmark D/A

6. New/Additional carrying cases for mics and general equipment ( I really dig the Pelican 1610 - it's what I carry my pc and pc gear in and they are darned cheap considering what you get!)

7. 8 more channels of A/D

8. 4 to 8 more channels of pre - mostly flavored stuff - looking at the GT Brick and some Amek stuff. (Did I see correctly that you have some Amek in your racks?? What's your take on them for Vox and strings?)

My wish-list is pretty simple - for now.....

1. new "office" computer - and bump down one of my PC DAWs.

2. 8 pr 150' Snake. I need to leave one at the same place all season, I'm TIRED of setting it up and wrapping it up every other week. Gonna LEAVE it there, mark it, and save the hassle.

3. The Sony HVR-Z1U Pro HDV camcorder....oops! That's video/photography, but since everyone's getting into the act, I thought I'd mention it. :-) (If you think Audio is bad, just TRY to stay current with DV video and HD video.....sheeesh!!!!! I've got some DV cameras that need servicing, or not - I'm actually being forced to reconsider it all, dump them and go HDV for my next purchase....just insane.)

And then there are mics....so many choices....so many sweet, beautiful MICROPHONES.........mmmmm.........

Jeremy, I can advise that both the Dyn's and particularly the Benchmark DAC are wonderful bits of gear, we have the 15a's. The DAC will make you rethink a lot of your opinions about digital audio and particularly the hi-res audio debate, we can start arguing again. :) I would say the DAC-1 is probably the best bit of audio gear I have ever bought, ie best defined as making the "most" improvement to sound quality.

I have my very talented electronics guru, Warren Huck, looking at my line mixer spec, he has a great design sorted and its not going to be expensive. This is a HUGE hole in the market IMHO. We have lots of mic outboard pres and do not need all the circuitry of a typical mackie for location mixing and tracking.

This sounds interesting to me as well as I'm in the market for a new "mixer" (digital or not). A quite simple 16 chanel line mixer with master gain, a good pan, 5' faders and perhaps channel VU, choosable mix to stereo or channels straight. I have less need for eq och efects sends.

Other on my list are more DAV pre channels, perhaps a few MG 930's, a pair of MG 960 omnis and perhaps a pair of Brauner VM1's and a Valvet for voice. And depending on Mixer choice, a set of A/D and D/A's (Would love Weiss but will settle for less :wink: ).

Nothing irrational about it - the 4060 is one of the best tube mics on the planet!

The wish list would be longer, but that's probably what I can realistically hope to get this year, if I can flog enough other stuff on Ebay. Monitoring and room treatment isn't sexy, but I've been putting that off for too long, and it's probably the weak spot in my current setup.

Oh yeah, and I'm going to get a 4x14 Gretsch snare drum and a real hi hat to supplement my DrumKAT midi drum setup. I'm tired of trying to fake brush and hi hat sounds, gotta have the real thing.

I just picked up a pair of AKG C391Bs - I'd like to get a CK94 figure 8 capsule, then a pair of CK92 OMNI caps. Hopefully this will be my poor man's MKH MS setup. I want the Omni caps so I can play with a Jecklin disk. If I'm feeling rich I might get two of the CK94s so I can go Blumlein as well as MS.

My all time studio wish list :

1- finish my custom high-end line console which i'm working on for almost two years now with an amazing vintage audio electronics engineer and assistant working on this project every day ... it's very complicated thing to build because there are 16 seriously modified sontec eq's (you can call it a gml 9500 ) and 8* 1176s on board and 3 summing methods (active tube summing, passive summing, and outboard summing using 1272's , 1081's and rcaNeumann ba-71a's) all channels using a very high-quality io transformers , p&g faders , 4 ply pcb's for the whole console circuits , and a mastering grade patch bay using silver connectors and teflon cables.

i can't wait any longer and almost all my studio money is going for this purpose , i hope it will be finished in 6 months

2- a high end 2 channels da (i wish i could get a DCS converters so i'll have a set with my DCS 904 ad)

3- 16 Lavry blue ad and 16 Lavry blue da (which i'm not so sure about anymore)

4- finish my custom made variable mu mastering compressor (the design is already there made by i.j research on bread board but this monster has to be built !!! )

Basically, my gear list to come depends on how well a product that I'm involved in launches, I've been at it two years, owe a lot of money lol but , this should er, make up for it when it takes off,

if anyone is interested http://www.mditriggerguard.com a simple locking clip that snaps on to an MDI inhaler to prevent accidental discharge. class II medical device and now ( finally) fully FDA approved . almost there, setting up distribution in states and globally . Basically inhallers represent 8.5 billion in sales globally. we hope to cut into some of that :)

so once that starts paying, I plan to dig out of debt, buy gear, find a house , build a couple of rooms, and hopefully learn how to use it all as a project studio for my own work .. lol

either way, it's a list i'm sure i'll get, may be added to, who knows,,

I am surprised, ... try to find all the problems noted about the Fostex PD6 Filmsound recorder to DVD blank, they quickly offered an internal HD option. I would buy this Tascam if it recorded BWAV to common PC hard disk, like the NigNog does superbly.

I have to chime in here against DVD for data, at least for now, I'm sorry to say. It's been a pretty disappointing hit and miss thing for us, and I'm not sure why; we're still investigating and experimenting.

When backing up projects, I burn lots of DVD-ROM discs (pure data, not DVD-A or AC3 or DVD movies, etc) and I can't tell you how many times (after testing them, etc.) they become problematic months later. I will save a couple of these (let's say 3 or 4) full of data (4.7 gig) from a project, and carefully label them as Pt 1, 2, 3, etc. and then once I'm sure they're ok, I'll wipe the HD to save space, etc. We store most things offsite, in a cool, dark, climate controlled space, as well.

Months later, (using the same drive to read them as burn them) I will sometimes get unreadable discs, or slow-reading discs or just stupid stuff that frustrates the hell out of us, esp when time is critical. (It should NOT take 4-5 hrs to read a pokey DVD-rom to re-load a project for a client that's due after lunchtime, for example.) What pisses me off is that we've tested these suckers, we've even read them back just to be double-sure, and yet this still happens far too often.

With that in mind, I look at that DV-RA1000 and wonder.... will they use proprietary blanks from a particular brand that they recommend? Have they found out something the other drive makers don't know?

With the price of big-ass HDs dropping constantly, I've now just assign various entire HDs for clients and back up to them directly. I have a couple of removable Firewire bays where I plug in the HDs, and transfer the data that way. I can get an entire season's worth of stuff per client on a 160 gig HD for example, from a choir, a chamber group, etc. I label them with easy to read large white labels (keeping it simple with date/year/client) and simply put them away in storage with the CDrs, DVD-roms, etc. when the project is complete.

I'm REALLY interested in the DV-RA1000, but I'm going to wait a bit till I find out how they're handling the unreliability of DVDr's for now. An internal HD would be a smart move, indeed. Let you record to BOTH out on a remote, then do a data comparison to make sure you've REALLY got it on DVD-r before you sign off on it.

RE Tascam DSD-- I thought this machine would write to a Firewire drive?

RE shopping list-- I just found a source (PC Mall) for new 17" LCD monitors for $159 and 19" for $260! Goodbye CRT.

In answer to your enquiry and good point!--one of my Tascam cd recorders was stolen recently and I thought I would use the insurance money to "upgrade?" to the latest cd recorder (that also use the DVD+R format) Don't worry---this thing would be used as
one of the back-ups to the main unit--the Nagra V.

I don't put a lot of stock in obtaining mindblowing sound from this new unit--although the flexibility to record long programs comes as an added benefit. We'll just have to see about the box and its
capabilities.

I was intrugued by the Fostex of some years ago. I am under the impression that this new Tascam uses a different type of DVD than the DVD originally specified for the Fostex.

It's new to me and I don't have the machine yet. I'll make a report here after it's been put through its paces.

No it doesn't... It does have a USB port on it so that you can mount it on a computer and use it as a DVD drive for a computer. THere is no ability to write to a hard drive, though... Bummer, because if there was I'd probably get one to replace my DA-78 with for backups.
