Whichmic and pre combination would you use?
I'm tracking 8 tracks of drums (well 6 cause I don't have the tom mics yet) I'm tracking to HD.
This is what I have for drums:

Pres
8- Neve 1073
2- Neve 1081
2- Avalon 737sp
2- API 512c

Mics
2- Neumann M147, or 2- AKG 114EB
2- AKG C12vr
1- Shure sm57
1- Shure KSM32
1- AKG c1000
1- AKG d112, or Sure BETA 52

I was thinking using the 57 and c1000 for top and bottom snare, and the KSM32 for a mono room, but I can't decide what to use for overheads. I want to try Recorderman's technique. And I need help with the preamp combinations. I always work with what I have, but this time I have more than I need!

Um, I'm no authority on mic'ing drums, but I do know that more than 1 of my friends that work at recording studio's have recommended Earthworks Small Diaphragm Condenser mics for excellent overheads... specifically the tc-30k, though I'd assume the QTC-1's are even better from the price.

As for preamps, I think that you'd just want a pre that has a quick response and is clear. I don't really know how that works into what you've got, but I'm just throwing crap out there, maybe your API's, but don't quote me on that. Ok, hope that was of some assistance, good luck.

I am practically salivating at the gear selection. There can be a lot of right answers here, and not a lot of wrong ones. I would use the 1073s for the drums, with the c12s as room mic pair, the 147s as OHs. I wouldn't be afraid to just throw up anything you have left over in experimental positions and print it. You may never use it but it can't hurt. Please post back on your decision and results. Are you going to track all your other instruments at this place as well? I am so salivating. Cheers, Doc

Crazy, you have a nice selection of gear to choose from and there is no reason why you can't get a decent drum sound.

I can't give you any specifics on combos because that will only be determined by listening but the direction with the 57 and 1000 sounds right to me.

I would save the Avalon for the snare and maybe the overheads. The Neve's and the API are fantastic mic pres but would probably do best on the kick and toms. A fast transformerless pre are usually better on some thing like a snare that has a lot of attack.

Now all you need is a great sounding room. Oh yea a decent drummer wouldn't hurt. :)

Kick in-D112-1081(Because of the frequencies available....especially try sucking out @ the 560hz EQ point!)
Kick Out-M147-1081
Snare Top&Bottom-57(I agree w/ E-cue....get another '57 for the borrom of the snare.....otherwise try the 1000 as you already mentioned)-1073(an option on this would be to use the API pre first, and then a 1073 as an EQ to add some top-end to the '57...the API is a brighter pre than the Neve....but I'd be happy as a pig in you know what with just a 1073.

OH-414-1073(if you're trying "my" OH position....otherwise if you're going to use high spaced pair-or anything else where the mic position will be safe from the drummer hitting them: OH-C12's-1073

Mono Rooms-M147-Avalon(squeeze this one)
Rack Tom-Ksm32-1073
Floor Tom-Shure beta 52-1073
hat-akg c1000-api
