I thought it would be appropriate to introduce myself as a newb on this board. I'm a frequent poster on homerec.com, and many of you will know me from there. Hi Alan, Harvey, Chessparov, and any other old aquaintances who may be lurking here!
To introduce myself, I'm an old folkie with roots in Jefferson Airplane, The Who, CSN&Y, the Eagles, The Beatles, Steeleye Span and a host of other influences. I played for a living for 12 years, up until about 1981, and then was out of the business for a little over 20 years. Then my wife, God love her, put me up to making a project CD, and being a stubborn SOB, I resolved to home track it, and outsource mixing and mastering.
I tracked down the best musicians I've ever worked with, and a few I haven't, and talked them into doing this for residuals! We are now about 3/4 done with the overdubs, and are planning a Christmas 2003 release party. In our humble estimation, whatever it is, it will be the most eclectic project disc ever recorded by a single set of staff. From medieval Celtic lap harp with classical guitar and Persian Zarb overlayed, to circa 1982 jock rock, no sh*t.
The staff comes from a wide variety of backgrounds. Lead Guitar-Christopher Woitach- a jazz man with a background in classical and acoustic blues. Bass- Bill Van Pelt- Woitach's high school partner (separated for 20 years), background in classical jazz-rock fusion, plays fretless bass, double bass, keyboards, guitar, mandolin. Drums- Jeff Webb, a graphic artist with a major talent for African Percussion-Djembe, Doumbek, Zarb, as well as trap set. Backing vocals- Maureen Fleming, an Indie from San Diego, she's a jazz singer with a background in folk and pop, also a killer songwriter/lyricist. Also, Carolyn Pfeffer, a rocket scientist (no sh*t) from Boulder, CO. The best amateur singer I've ever worked with. Alto Recorder- Vanessa Layne, a specialist in early music, and violin/viola- Audrey White, a professor at The New England Conservatory. I'm doing most of the tracking, with the help of Aidas Kupcinskas from the Tom Snyder group in Boston. Mixing will be done by DAvid Sparr at Littledog Studios in Malden, Mass. We haven't settled on a mastering house yet.
Well, I've had the 18 month crash course in gear and tracking 101, but I'm still a newb in many ways, although I think I'm wet to the knees now. Hope y'all can help me with good advice, I still need a lot of it.
