I am fighting a head cold and wasn't going to sing today. But the choir wasn't coming in very strong on some parts, so the lead singer told me to suck it up and grab a mic. As I'm eating the 58 in the fourth song it occurs to me that I wouldn't want to be the next person to get this mic.
Any pointers on treating communal mics during cold season? Purell wipes? UV rays?

As a proud employee of Johnson&Johnson , I would recommend Purell wipes. But in reality, pulling the ball off the 58 and spraying it down with Lysol (per Remy) is probably the best way. Use the Purells on the shaft (that's what she said!). I regularly spray all of my 58s' balls with Lysol...LOL!!!!
Lysol on the balls. Purell on the shaft. Got it. Shirl....?

Shirl....? We've got a big night ahead of us.
Seriously, I'm usually pretty good about keeping things clean, wiping things down with a damp rag now and then and dusting regularly. But I haven't been as good about disinfecting the mics. I'm generally careful about this kind of thing since my wife is a preschool teacher and I'm a college professor. We come in contact with every germ know to mankind.

You can boil the balls too. Remove the stuffin' first.
I once did sound for this evangelist: http://www.juanitabynum.com/
She is a screamer. She EATS the balls, and leaves them caked with red lip stick. She has some hellacious breath too. We walked around waiving the things under the noses of unsuspecting techs and watched them nearly vommit. Fun stuff.

Just to report on what I did - took the balls off od all the mics and gave them a light spry of Lysol and left them to dry in the sun for an hour on a nice day. Bought some Clorox wipes and have been giving everything a wipe down each week. The good news is that we have not damaged any mics. As far as everyone's heath I figure it can't hurt.

You should kill the germs at the source. Make the singers drink the Lysol and save yourself some time. Kidding of course. This recommendation is humor and is not supported by this website, it's owners or it's advertisers. Please consult a brain before using Lysol.

Mmmmm. Lysol. It's not so bad if you mix it with cola. Of course there's the risk of going blind but it's cheaper than wiskey!
Edit: Yes. I'm kidding.

For definite, I'd have the pop shield off and clean that separately, maybe lukewarm water. I know nothing about cleaning though.
