I didn' think there were different types of synthesizers - but i want a new one up to date with as many features as possible - more things i can fiddle with the better :P
Mainly going to be using it to edit midi inputs with my plugins on my DAW but, i equally like to have the synthesizer have lots of goodies to come with it that i can play about with and experiment with new sounds.

Do you consider your VI's a good outlet for new sounds?
I guess if I were to recommend a new synthesizer under $900USD I would be hard pressed to do so. IMO, the newest technology is with your VI's. If I had to I would save more money and wait to go with a Yamaha motif , Kurzwiel PC3x or a vintage instrument. If I had too make a decision on a new instrument I would look closer at a Roland Juno-G:

Its just really hard to find anything in the lower price ranges that measures up to a decent all around intrument. YMMV

I think this post belongs in the musical instruments section, but I suppose the pro audio forum will fit.
sirchick, Could you be more specific? Are you looking for a certain type of synthesis? A keyboard or a module? New or used?
I can suggest a used Ensoniq ESQ-1 or ESQ-m, the ESQ-m was my first synthesizer back in 1988. I use a Roland XV-3080 that I am very happy with, also a Yamaha SY-99.
All of these classify as used instruments, you should check out this page if you have not already:
