hey guys i got another question for ya...
I listened to some jack johnson music and he sings so low and soft yet you can hear his vocals so cleanly and they sound so bright
when i try to sing like he does in an average sized room with carpet floor my vocals sound dull and muddy
could anyone give me any advice on maybe where he mite stand while singing or what kind of room or mic he uses
thanks

There's an interview about his most recent album at a "green" studio. Forget the name of the studio.
In TapeOp I think, but it could be Mix.
They go into pretty good detail about mic choices, source isolation, and the like.
When I get a chance to thumb through the more recent issues I have of each, I'll let you know.
Hopefully you find out before then.

Take out the carpet. It's a frequency-selective absorber that takes treble and mids out of the spectrum but has little to no effect on bass.

Soapfloats, their studio is called Brushfire studios, and it is a very interesting interview. Robert Carranza, the engineer, doesn't go into any details about equipment or technique, but more emphasizes the importance of songwriting and overall emotion. Totally worth reading though considering Carranza has worked with Jack Johnson, the Mars Volta, Beck, and Los Lobos. And the solar-powered studio sounds pretty cool.

Maybe I'm mixing two articles...
That IS the article I was remembering from Tape-Op, though.
JGs point is important - there's a lot more variables involved than getting the same mic.
Methinks the organic nature of the recording that FootPrints mentions is equally as important as mic choice.....

Here's a video of him in the studio, showing where he stands and what mic he's using though I don't recognize it someone here might, and remember he is in a studio not someones living room.
Edit: oops the video don't play but the mic should be identifiable.
